South Lake Tahoe Teen Victim of Hit & Run in Stable Condition

A 15 year old South Lake Tahoe teen is in stable condition today after being struck by a car, dragged through an intersection, and left in a snow bank at the corner of Washington and Third Streets on Monday evening. The suspect, a male driver, left the scene in a white or off white subaru.

His mother, Aisha Sequoiyah, spoke to SouthTahoeNow.com today from Renown Medical Center in Reno. She said her son Abiyah is doing okay and is undergoing cognitive tests today to determine that there is no brain damage. She hopes he will be released later today.

Chamber Ribbon Cutting for Tahoe Restaurant Delivery and More

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is having a ribbon cutting ceremony on February 11 for Tahoe Restaurant Delivery & More. The 11 am ceremony will highlight the delivery service and showcase their vendor's menus as well as have samples on hand.

The vendors include Beach Hut Deli, Overland Meat & Seafood, Natural Foods Bakery, Yama Noodles and Sno-Flake Drive In.

61.8% of South Lake Tahoe Students Receive Free or Reduced Cost Lunches

In a community where the economy and weather affect jobs and business levels, perhaps no better indicator is the number of South Lake Tahoe school students who are dependent on the free or reduced cost school lunch program.

Currently, 61.8% of all students are on these programs in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, ranging from a high of 81.3% of the students at Tahoe Valley Elementary to a low of 19.3% at the Environmental Science Magnet School.

Celebrities Attend Grand Opening of The Landing in South Lake Tahoe

Model and television personality Heidi Klum hit the red carpet in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night to help celebrate the opening of the new luxury hotel, The Landing. She was joined by 10 time Grammy award winner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, local business owners and associates.

The party highlighted what the hotel is bringing to the south shore: a 5 star boutique property with high end amenities, a beautiful onyx bar, a restaurant under the direction of a celebrated British chef, fire pits as well as a new wedding and event venue.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Pamela's Pilates

Holiday Pet Food Drive at Coldwell Banker Select in Zephyr Cove A Huge Success

On December 28th, Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate in Zephyr Cove decided to give back to the pets in the community by hosting a Holiday Pet Food Drive, yielding big results. Leading up to the 28th, close to 600 lbs of dog and cat food were donated to pets in need. In addition, many pet toys and other items were donated, on top of $170 in check donation.

Cultured Kitchen Cheeses Recalled Due to Salmonella Risk

The Cultured Kitchen out of West Sacramento, CA has initiated a recall of all flavors of their cashew cheese products due to risk of contamination with Salmonella. The products were sold in natural food stores throughout Northern California and Northern Nevada, and at farmers markets in Sacramento and have an expiration dates of on or before April 19, 2014.

"Always My Buddy" Has a Presence at SnowGlobe

Tragedy struck at the 2012 SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe when 19 year old Alyssa Byrne became separated from her friends and died of hypothermia after falling in a snow bank after attempting to walk back to her hotel.

Out of that tragedy, the "Always My Buddy" program was developed. Alyssa's family wanted to make sure another family didn't have to go through what they did by making sure everyone that is an unfamiliar place is safe.

A Time of Giving: Moose Lodge Leads Effort to Help Out 20 South Lake Tahoe Families

The Christmas season is a bit brighter for 20 South Lake Tahoe families who all received boxes full of food donated by the local Moose Lodge and their community partners. During the past week, students at Bijou Community School decorated the boxes which held the food donations.

In order to help the families, who are part of the Family Resource Center, Moose Lodge member Robbie Koth conducted a donation drive in the community. He raised enough to donate a large ham and food supplies to each family.

South Lake Tahoe residents in need will be the beneficiaries of the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority Drive By Food & Toy Drive being held this week.

Bins for Christmas Cheer will be available in front of the LTVA California location at 3066 Highway 50 across from Rojo's and Snowflake Drive-In through December 14 from 9 am to 5 pm.

Christmas Cheer feeds over 400 families regularly, all year long, and the need for wholesome meals is even more important to those with children who are out of school at the holidays. For more information call 530-541-5255

Sierra at Tahoe Opens on Friday

Cold weather and snow this week is allowing Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort to open for the 2013-14 season on Friday, December 6, 2013 with early season conditions and very limited terrain. The ski resort will operate the Easy Rider Express chairlift which will give skiers and snowboarders access to the right half of Broadway trail. This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them.

Carbon Monoxide Not a Harmless, Colorless Gas

It's colorless and odorless. It's tasteless and virtually undetectable. It can be deadly when inhaled.

"It" is carbon monoxide (CO) and is responsible for hundreds of deaths a year.

You read and hear about it in the news too often: Occupant of home found dead due to carbon monoxide poisoning. In Truckee recently, two men died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by their home's heating ventilation.

Round Hill Pines Scheduled to Change Operators at End of 2013

Bob and Tammy Hassett, current operators of Camp Richardson and Meeks Bay Resort have been selected to run the concession at Round Hill Pines Resort according to Cheva Heck of the U.S. Forest Service. The current lease is held by the Forvilly family and is set to expire on December 31, 2013. Frank Forvilly has operated Round Hill Pines since 1971 and just found out yesterday that they weren't awarded the new contract.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

LTCC Joins Bread & Broth to Provide Hot Meals for Hungry Locals

A hearty group of volunteers from Lake Tahoe Community College donated their time to Bread and Broth recently, helping to prepare and serve a hot meal to hungry locals as part of the Adopt a Day of Nutrition program. Four LTCC managers donned aprons and kitchen gloves to serve food, prepare giveaway bags, and assist with the cleanup.

Heavenly Receives 6-8” of Snow; Kicks Off Snowmaking for November 22 Opening

In anticipation of a November 22, 2013 opening day, Heavenly Mountain Resort has fired up the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and has begun making snow at the top of the Gondola and on California Trail. The resort received its first significant snowfall of the season last night with 6-8 inches of snow overnight on the mountain.

Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Halloween Dance with the Tahoe Dance Band - at the Senior Center on Friday, October 25. The 17 piece dance band will perform big band music, food, drink, costume prizes. 7:30 - 10 pm. $10.

Hi. I’m Buddy the bear. I guess that’s my name because I hear people calling me that. “Hey Buddy get out of here.” Or “There’s that bear, Bud get out of here. Maybe my name is Get out of here. I live in the neighborhood at South Lake Tahoe. I have lived here a long time. I like it because the people are good to me. They put food in the garage for me. I get the big bags out, doesn’t have a good smell. Kind of like the dried grass in the field. Some time I share it with some noisy four legged animals. I see the people give them food first and then they put it back in the garage for me to take.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

We found lots of things to enjoy while out and about in South Lake Tahoe today!

The Pumpkin and Pony Festival at Forest Suites had several things for everyone to enjoy. There were local business booths, a pumpkin patch, pony and tractor rides, a climbing wall and bouncy house, live music and two food booths and historical entertainment. You can still catch this on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

The South Tahoe Music Department had a rummage sale in the parking lot of the Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health to raise money for the music programs.

Back Roads - Lake Tahoe to Apple Hill via Highway 4

My daughter and I had been planning our annual Apple Hill trek for several days when I decided to change it up a bit. Since my free time is so rare I figured why not include a visit to our favorite little town Sutter Creek? And then, since we're doing that, might as well throw in a drive down beautiful Highway 4! Since the portion of the road we'll be covering is closed after the first big snow we had to do it! The day was plotted on a map in my head with some verification on google maps. The map said our little trip was going to take 5 hours and 10 minutes and cover 225 miles.

Oktoberfest is Alive and Well in South Lake Tahoe

Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson is living up to expectations with their food, drink, crafts, games and kid's activities. If the cars parked along Highway 89 is any indication there were several hundred people, if not into the thousands, enjoying the festivities.

The annual event runs until Sunday at 5 pm so there is still time to make it out. The Trolley will be running from the Y and dropping off passengers right in front of Camp Richardson. Biking and walking are also very viable options if one prefers not to drive.

Why I Farm Author to Speak at Library

20th Annual Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Golf Classic

Join in on a day of fun, golf, great food, great friends and lots of prizes at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe's 20th annual golf tournament. This year's event is held once again at Edgewood Tahoe on October 14, a day after the course closes to the public.

The $225 fee covers a round of golf, tee prizes, a chance at tournament prizes, raffle prizes, a gourmet lunch, on course lunch and beverages and a post-round reception. There will also be a wide assortment of silent auction items.

Alissa Nourse Steps Down as Tahoe Youth & Family Services Executive Director

Tahoe Youth & Family Services announces the resignation of Executive Director, Alissa Nourse. Nourse leaves the agency after nine years of exceptional work to accept a position with Alpine County as the Director of Behavioral Health, Alpine County, California.

Under Ms. Nourse's guidance the agency has steadily grown now providing services in South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Incline Village and Alpine County. The budget has grown from $450,000 to $1,600,000 allowing the agency to expand services and locations.
