Red Flag Warning and Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 3:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has changed their previous Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday, September 8 from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
They have also issued a Special Weather Statement and a Lake Wind Advisory for Tuesday from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Red Flag Warning
This warning is in place due to gusty winds and low humidity for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierrs, and Eastern Nevada Counites. Fire Zone 271 and Fire Zone 272.

Heavy smoke from the Creek Fire over South Lake Tahoe Saturday
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/05/2020 - 4:14pmSUNDAY UPDATE 11:00 a.m.: Eight hundred personnel are currently fighting the Creek Fire which has grown to 45,500 acres.
The Creek Fire a fast-moving fire burning on both Districts of the Forest. The fire which started near the communities of Big Creek and Huntington Lake, moved very quickly prompting several evacuations. Early Saturday afternoon the fire crossed the San Joaquin River and made a run into the Mammoth Pool area. Prompting some members of the public to shelter in place near Wagner’s Store and Campground.

Heat advisory in effect all weekend for Lake Tahoe communities

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory from 11:00 a.m. Friday to 8:00 p.m. Sundayfor Lake Tahoe due to consecutive days of high temperature. The forecast highs are 90-93 degrees those three days and record high temperatures are likely this holiday weekend.
Not only will there be high temperatures, there will also be widespread haze due to Northern California fires.
Fire restrictions expand to USFS lands in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/31/2020 - 10:28amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will start enhanced fire restrictions in national forest campgrounds on September 1, 2020 due to dry conditions.
On August 21, fire agencies around the Lake Tahoe Basin banned all open burning utilizing wood and charcoal at homes, parks, beaches and most campgrounds. LTBMU was not part of that original ban.
All areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin are now under these restrictions.
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Hazy start and hot finish to the week

August wraps up with widespread haze from the fires north of the lake and a slightly "cooler" day. Things will be clearing out Tuesday and an unusually warm air mass takes hold the end of the week and through the weekend with temperatures likely to near record highs.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/25/2020 - 12:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Glag Warning from noon to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 25. They are calling for a chance of thunderstorms and strong outflow winds in the Lake Tahoe area.
There is the possibility of isolated to scattered thunderstorms with little, or limited, rainfall though the storms may be a hybrid of wet and dry. The faster storm motions will likely allow for lightning strikes outside of the main thunderstorm cores. With fire fighting resources already stretched thin, any new fire starts will be an issue.
Red Flag Warning to start off the week in Lake Tahoe, ending with seasonable weather

The forecast is on track for thunderstorms chances through Tuesday as moisture leftover from tropical storm Genevieve moves northward through the region.
There are no thunderstorms in the forecast Wednesday through Saturday and afternoon breezes look to be on the lower-end of the spectrum. Afternoon temperatures should trend down to near normal by midweek but may start to trend warmer next weekend.
Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe starts Sunday night

All wood and charcoal fires banned in Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/20/2020 - 10:17pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - In a unified move, all fire agencies around the Lake Tahoe Basin have banned all open burning utilizing wood and charcoal for the remainder of the summer, or longer if needed. This includes campgrounds with fire rings, fire pits at homes and all charcoal barbeques whether at home or at public and private facilities.
The suspension takes effect at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2020 and will be enforced with extinguishment and possible citations and fines.
Smoke and haze to continue over Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/19/2020 - 8:14amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno issued a special weather statement Wednesday, calling for widespread smoke and haze over the Sierra and northern California and western Nevada.
As of 8:00 a.m. the Air Quality measurement in South Lake Tahoe is 82, the moderate range. Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. it jumped to 161, in the unhealthy range.

Loyalton Fire is now at 46,386 acres and is 35 percent contained
Claremont Fire near Quincy is 450 acres
North Complex Fires are near Quincy and at 5,400 acres, 5 percent contained
Smoke filling Lake Tahoe Basin from Loyalton Fire
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/17/2020 - 3:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 36,295 acre Loyalton Fire north of Lake Tahoe is filling the Lake Tahoe Basin with smoke this afternoon.
The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department has been fielding several calls from concerned residents.
The National Weather Service in Reno said the smoke from the new fire in Nevada County most likely isn't the culprit due to the amount of smoke. They said thunderstorms are developing outside of the basin and stirring up the smoke.
A warm week ahead for Lake Tahoe

Smoke in Lake Tahoe Basin from Northern California fires

The Stump Fire started Saturday afternoon and is near State Highways 36 and 172 near Childs Meadows, in the mountains between Red Bluff and Susanville. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said some smoke could also possibly be coming from the 1,800 acre Red Salmon Complex fire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.
Normally, the Basin averages six Red Flag Warnings per season, and this makes four - and it's still July. Please remember all outdoor sources of open flame are prohibited until the Red Flag Warning declaration expires, and that includes gas/propane fire pits and grills.

Smoke filling Lake Tahoe Basin from Hog Fire near Susanville

The fire is now 5,800 acres and is 0 percent contained.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has been receiving calls since early this morning about the smell of smoke in neighborhoods throughout South Lake Tahoe.
The cooler nighttime temperatures pushed the smoke down.
The National Weather Service in Reno said a dense smoke advisory is in place for areas closers to Susanville

Winds will remain light except for afternoon zephyr breezes and the occasional outflow winds from thunderstorms. Any strong storms that develop can produce outflow winds over 40 mph, heavy rain, and hail. If heavy rain lingers over steep terrain or a recently burned slope, some flash flooding and/or debris flows can occur.

Summer fire restrictions around Lake Tahoe

It is important to understand that with all of the different fire areas around Lake Tahoe, there are different rules.

The showers will be diminishing this evening with a cold night Sunday. There will be widespread freezing temperatures with South Lake Tahoe seeing mid-20s. Things will start warming up closer to average by the middle of the week with lighter winds. Another low is possible Friday and Saturday with breezy winds, showers, and cooler temperatures.

Two men rescued from Lake Tahoe after their kayaks capsize
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/07/2020 - 8:42amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two men were pulled from the chilly waters of Lake Tahoe after their kayaks capsized late Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 6, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue's Marine 17 was dispatched to the water off of Baldwin Beach for possible kayakers in distress. One of the kayakers was able to make a call and the GPS coordinates put the two men several hundred yards off the shore between Baldwin Beach and Emerald Bay.

The National Weather Service is forecasting southwest winds 20-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe could be 2-4 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
And if the wind wasn't enough, there is a chance of snow for Lake Tahoe Saturday night.

Winds from the west 15-20 mph are expected on the lake with gusts to 35 mph. Waves will be 1-3 feet with the highest waves on eastern shores.
Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
Temperatures will be rising at the lake, with a dip into the 80s anticipated by Tuesday!

A late-season storm will bring gusty winds, below-average temperatures, mountain snow, and periods of valley rain for the rest of today through Tuesday. Cloud cover hangs around into Wednesday keeping temperatures below seasonal averages with a few showers possible. Winds increase Thursday ahead of another system
which could bring a second round of cooler temperatures and scattered showers back to the region for Friday and Saturday.

Winds are expected from the southwest at 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

There is a Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday. Stronger winds will be north of US50 and east of US395. The winds will bring a cooling trend as a low-pressure system reaches the northwest U.S. coast. From Tuesday through Thursday, below-average temperatures are expected with breezy winds and chances for rain and high elevation snow showers mainly near the Sierra and north of Interstate 80.

Temperatures by next weekend will be soaring into the upper 80s across western Nevada with the upper 70s in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Building high pressure; above average temps by weekend

The best chance of showers will be in the eastern Sierra Monday afternoon and evening where some light snow accumulation is possible at the highest passes. Low pressure, almost cutoff, will move into the region starting Thursday. This will increase chances for showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday into the weekend, mainly in the afternoon and early evening hours, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

travel. Cool and snowy/rainy conditions persist through Tuesday but chances will diminish as the low exits the region. High pressure then builds for the second half of the week with a drying and warming pattern expected heading into the weekend.

Winter Storm Warning until Monday for Lake Tahoe

At 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said to expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges.
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Lots of sun, near average daytime temperature
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/29/2020 - 4:47pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you looked at the 7-day forecast on Sunday morning you may have been excited...high 50s at the end of the week followed by a 60 on Easter Sunday. That all went awry by afternoon as the weather models show a cold front dropping further south than originally planned and into northern California and Nevada with the jet stream near the Oregon border.
There will now be increased winds for Wednesday through Friday afternoons, particularly for thee Sierra ridges. The highs decreased and will now be closer to average and a chance of precipitation lingers.
Winter Weather Advisory for South Lake Tahoe through Wednesday morning
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/24/2020 - 5:04pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 25.
The only change to the earlier weather forecast is a slight increase in projected snowfall for areas east of SR89.
Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in South Lake Tahoe with 5 to 10 inches along and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. They are calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph this afternoon and evening in the greater Lake Tahoe area.

A low-pressure area will approach late in the day and move through southern Nevada tonight. This will bring light mountain snow showers with a few valley rain showers.
