Maddie Bowman leads pack at U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Park City
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/03/2016 - 5:38pmPark City, UT (Feb. 3, 2016) – The U.S. qualified seven total skiers to the finals of the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix at Park City on Wednesday, with Maddie Bowman of South Lake Tahoe leading the way with the top spot for the women while Aaron Blunck (Crested Butte, CO) was the top American for the men, qualifying in second.
"Qualifying went really well," said the South Tahoe High graduate. "Everyone’s pretty tired after X Games but everyone went out and did the best that they could do and laid down a good qualifier, so I’m excited for finals."
Kiwanis offers free fingerprinting and identification program in South Lake Tahoe

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is holding a community Child Fingerprinting ID event at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe on February 16 and 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Nationally, large numbers of children run away or are abducted each year. Local law enforcement officers have indicated that having a record of fingerprints can be helpful in an effort to safely return the children to their homes.
Malcolm C. Pribyl 1946-2016

The long time local had recently moved to the Sacramento area due to illness.
Malcolm graduated from Tracy High School and U.C. Davis. Following completion of his military service, Malcolm moved to the South Shore where he worked at Sahara Tahoe.
He owned Malcolm C Pribyl Insurance Agents And Services which operated for years on Ski Run Blvd, after which he operated out of his home on the meadow near the college.
Maddie Bowman wins gold; Jamie Anderson silver in XGames
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/30/2016 - 12:30amAll three runs for South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman in the Women's Ski SuperPipe X Games today beat all competitors on the course, earning her a fourth straight gold medal in the event. The 22-year-old Olympic gold medalist has also won a silver and bronze in the X Games.
Bowman scored a 85.33 on her first run Friday, followed by a 87.33 and 89.00. Second place finisher Ayana Onozuka of Japan ended up with a high run of 85.00. Bronze medalist Annalisa Drew of the USA had an 83.00.

Amgen Tour announces Lake Tahoe men's and women's race schedule
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/28/2016 - 3:08pmLake Tahoe will be the scene of both Amgen Tour of California's men's and women's races in May of 2016, and the routes announced Thursday show cyclists will ride into the Tahoe Basin from Kirkwood and Hope Valley, circle the lake, ride up the mountains leading to the Heavenly Mountain Resort and through South Lake Tahoe.
Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe by putting their strength and muscle power to the test as they climb, descend and break away along steep and winding stretches of the Sierra on Thursday, May 19.

Still no sign of missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor; Not seen since Thursday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 9:32amThere is still no sign of 23-year-old Carson May, the Sugar Bowl ski instructor who went missing after taking an after-work run Thursday afternoon, despite efforts by 60 searchers at the resort on Sunday.
Searchers were back on this hill at 8:00 a.m. today.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/16/2016 - 9:53pmThe search for a missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor has been called off for the evening by the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
More than 50 people spent the day searching for 23-year-old Carson May who hasn't been seen since Thursday when he went skiing after work.
Searchers, with the help of search and rescue dogs, have been focusing their search on the back side of the mountain where the sheriff's office has been able to get pings from May's cell phone.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/04/2016 - 7:02pmJust over two months ago, we wrote about how a large group of South Tahoe High alumni were rallying behind one of their classmates, Kevin Sullivan, who was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
At October's homecoming football game at STHS, many of Kevin's classmates from the class of 1984 and former teammates from the wrestling and football teams came together to honor Kevin and fondly share their memories.

New on the South Shore: Neighborhood Burgers opens on Kingsbury

Neighborhood Burgers was opened by locals Erik Watada and Matt Grime, and in less than a week of being open its already a hit.
Grime, owner of The Fox & Hound at the top of Kingsbury, joined Watada in providing an option for people to get a quick bite, especially those on the Nevada side where options are at a minimum.

Randy Brooks, 67, a song writer and son of a church organist, told Reuters Wednesday he may not have left his mark on pop culture had it not been for car trouble in Lake Tahoe.

January 19, 2016 - 9:00am South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is happy to be hosting both a blood drive and a coat drive in South Lake Tahoe. The goal is to help the community by providing vital blood as a resource within our community and also provide coats to children in need. We encounter children on calls often who could benefit from a coat donation and hope to make a difference with this.

Free bus rides on Blue Go routes 50 and 53 December 19-January 3

Routes 50 and 53 will be free for all riders. All other routes will operate under normal fares.

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe is holding their 34th annual Mid-Winter Beach Party Crab Feed on Friday, January 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Harrah's Convention Center.
This popular event is just $40 per person and will feature tables full of the tasty crustaceans as well as a silent auction and live music by A CLass Act.
Beach Attire is highly encouraged.
Tickets are limited and are expected to sell out. Reserved Tables are also available.
Holiday Parade heads through South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The fourth annual Holiday Parade will make its way through South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, December 12 starting at 3:00 p.m.
Golden Bear Events is the organizer of the event which will raise money and food for Christmas Cheer, South Lake Tahoe's year-round food pantry.
This year, ten parade entries will start at the top of Ski Run Blvd, head down towards the lake, turn west on Highway 50 and end in the TJMaxx parking lot where people can enjoy cookies and a visit with Santa Claus. The parade should end there at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Councilwoman sues the City of South Lake Tahoe and City Manager
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/10/2015 - 2:34pmCity Councilwoman JoAnn Conner filed a lawsuit against the City of South Lake Tahoe and City Manager Nancy Kerry in El Dorado County Court on Wednesday, December 9, asking for the City Council's censure of her be withdrawn.
In a special meeting of the Council on October 19, Conner was censured for interactions she had with City staff which at times were described as bullying and creating a hostile work environment.
With storm headed to Lake Tahoe, Caltrans offers tools to help be prepared
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/09/2015 - 9:59pmWith a forecast for the Sierra of a significant snowfall over both Donner Summit and Echo Summit, Caltrans issued a statement for motorists to take caution and to alert drivers of tools at their disposal to help them on their trip.
High winds are predicted with heavy snow, creating the potential for white-outs and even blizzard conditions on summit passes between Wednesday night and Friday morning.
City may use eminent domain to complete Ski Run to El Dorado Bike Path
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/07/2015 - 11:45pmThere are five small pieces of property standing in the way of completing the Ski Run Blvd to El Dorado Beach Class 1 multi-use trail, and it was determined in a City Council vote that South Lake Tahoe can resort to using eminent domain if necessary in order to complete it.
The walking and biking path is ten feet wide, and as it crosses the land in front of the old Don Cheapo's Ski Rentals, Beach Retreat at Tahoe, Heidi's Restaurant and Tahoe Beach & Ski Club, the City needs easement in order to make the path the required width, make it safe, and have it landscaped.
South Lake Tahoe drive-by shooting suspect arrested on multiple felony charges
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/07/2015 - 9:32amThe hunt is over for the suspect in the October 14 drive-by shooting in South Lake Tahoe that sent a 19-year-old man to the hospital.
Samuel Tovar, 43, was arrested after a high-risk search warrant was served at 816 San Francisco Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday, October 4. Inside they found Tovar, who had been avoiding law enforcement since the shooting.
Low inversion layer keeping smoke from prescribed burns near ground
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/05/2015 - 11:14amSmoke from local prescribed burns can be seen, and smelled, through much of South Lake Tahoe today. A cool night and low inversion layer have trapped the smoke closer to the ground than normal.
What most residents are experiencing is coming from a 69-acre prescribed burn area near Trout Creek that was ignited Friday. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department said there are no vegetative fires in the basin.
Smoke was especially heavy Friday night and looked much like fog while navigating many streets in the area.
New mayor and end of plastic bag ban on SLT City Council agenda Monday

Hal Cole's term as mayor during the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary is coming to a close. During the next City Council meeting on Monday, December 7, the next mayor and mayor pro-tem will be elected. All current council members are eligible though first term Councilwoman Wendy David is the current mayor pro-tem.
Normally held on Tuesdays, the Council meeting was moved to Monday so Tom Davis could attend his daughter-in-law's graduation from nursing school in Tennessee. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at the airport.

STPAL reached over 60 local middle school-aged kids with the opportunity to learn lifelong skills in mountain biking, skateboarding, and golf alongside positive adult role models.
Schedule for South Lake Tahoe's decorated fire truck released
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/01/2015 - 2:24pmThe South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has released the schedule for their 2015 decorated Christmas engine. All of the fun runs nightly from December 10 to 24 barring any weather issues or emergencies.
The truck leaves Fire Station 2 at 5:00 p.m. nightly.

Friday, December 11.......Glenwood
Saturday, December 12.....Keys Blvd / State Sts
Sunday, December 13.......South Y /Tata
Monday, December 14.......Barton / Tahoe Island

Zawadisha's annual Holiday Bazaar is back again, and this time in a new location. Join them at the Blue Angel Cafe on Saturday, December 5 to knock out your holiday shopping while helping to change the world at the same time. The event will be held in the loft upstairs at the restaurant located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Entrance is free and all ages are welcome.
