LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What is sustainable tourism and what does it mean for Lake Tahoe?
The future of Tahoe tourism needs to be sustainable. This year’s Annual Tourism Forum will address this global concern on a local level on Thursday, May 30 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Responsible tourism is something all businesses in the Lake Tahoe basin are working towards and this year’s forum will explore that theme. The forum will include a main keynote speaker, two general sessions, and breakout sessions designed to get a closer look at four key topics.
STPUD approves lower water and sewer rate hikes than originally planned

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past few months, the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) has been meeting with staff and the public to discuss rate changes needed to improve the water, sewer and recycled water systems to their customers.
To start the process of raising rates each year for the next five years, STPUD followed a set of rules outlined under Proposition 218, one of which was to send notices to their ratepayers on how much the proposed increase could be.
South Lake Tahoe's Stephanie Zepeda inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Stephanie Zepeda, a 2011 graduate of South Tahoe High School, was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Zepeda was initiated at the University of Southern California.
Zepeda is a 2015 graduate of UC San Diego and now in graduate school at USC.

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.
On Campus
The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) awarded $12,700 in awards and scholarships on Thursday to students from South Tahoe High, Whittell High, Mt. Tallac High, and South Tahoe Middle School. The students and their families were treated to breakfast as the awards were given to the deserving students.

At South Tahoe High School, students faced a surprisingly cold week with snowfall. Advanced placement testing finished, spirit week is about to begin, and sports teams reached the state championships.
On Campus
Advanced placement tests ended this week with AP Language and Composition on Wednesday. Stress is relieved, as there are only finals left on June 17 and 18.
Next week is spirit week. With events, such as dodgeball, “manly volleyball” and dress up days, students get to show their school spirit as the school year wraps up.
Naloxone saving lives locally and across the country

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Naloxone, a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid and heroin overdoses, is carried on police and deputy vehicles, ambulances and fire engines, giving first responders the chance to save lives. The problem of these overdoses is so widespread most medics and ambulances have administered the medication dozens of times, even in South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding counties.

Two SLTPD officers earn Meritorious Service awards at South Lake Tahoe ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual awards ceremony on Thursday, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) honored two of their officers for their response to a shooting on June 30. 2018.
SLTPD officers Derek Simon and Anton Kushlan earned the "Meritorious Service" award for selfless acts in the wake of a shooting.

Recycled water spills into Grass Lake Creek

5.10.19 Update: On Thursday, May 9, 2019, recycled water from a South Tahoe Public Utility District Luther Pass storage tank leaked into Grass Lake Creek. Water samples collected from Grass Lake Creek immediately following the spill showed no change in coliform bacteria, meaning the spill caused no significant impact to water quality. A leak from the overflow pipe inside the tank was the cause of the spill. The tank has been drained and taken off-line until repairs can be made.

Judge's decision in South Lake Tahoe courtroom calls California law unconstitutional

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One could feel the air let out of a South Lake Tahoe courtroom as visiting Judge Gary Mullen read his decision to the five defendants, their five lawyers and family members in attendance, one that tossed out their request to drop murder charges against all of the suspects in the robbery and murder in 2016 of Dennis Wright.
Judge Mullen declared California Senate Bill 1437 unconstitutional. The bill was signed by then-California Governor Jerry Brown in September 2018 and changed the liability for accomplices to felony murder.
City of South Lake Tahoe settles with fire engine manufacturer, gets $1.775M

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since its arrival, the 2013 model Ferrara ladder truck the City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) purchased has been been a "lemon," and now they have reached a settlement with the manufacturer, Ferrara Fire Apparatus of Holden, Louisiana.
In 2014, City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) took possession of a 2013 model Ferrara ladder truck at the tune of almost $1,050,000. It was purchased to replace the aging ladder truck SLTFR had from 1982 and was paid for with funds from California sales tax money devoted to public safety.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of Mrs. Lisa Maloff's numerous contributions to our community, today the South Lake Tahoe City Council officially renamed a street after her, and issued a proclamation.
In this proclamation, the City extended to Lisa and Robert "Bob" Maloff their appreciation and gratitude for the numerous donations made to the local community. Her philanthropic donations have forever changed the community and her donations
throughout the medical, education, field sports, and family services will touch generations of Lake Tahoe residents.

High Sierra Softball kicked off Opening Day 2019 this weekend at South Tahoe High’s Field Of Dreams. With registration up 30 percent from last year, the High Sierra Board would like to thank and share the generosity of a local business and service club who are helping the athletes in our league participate to their fullest.
Blue Zone Sports donated 12 softball gloves to the league.
"Many of our kids don’t have any equipment or are using their grandpa's old baseball glove," said Board President, Chris Chandler. "This donation is very thoughtful and essential for our players."
Grant applications being accepted for $50,000 in funding to improve community health

The Barton Foundation will be awarding $50,000 in grant funding to improve community health across the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. As part of Barton Health’s commitment to community health and collaboration, these annual grants provides funding for programs and services that positively impact the health of the local community. This week at South Tahoe High School, students had to put their jackets back on, as the weather cooled down. A trio of students will take turns acting as student council president, and a 13-year-old partnership on the baseball pitch comes to an end.

Students attended Industry Day on Tuesday to learn about different careers. They heard presentations from a range of companies, including the nutrition department and rehabilitation center of Barton Memorial Hospital.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has reached a tentative agreement with the South Tahoe Educator's Association (STEA).
The two groups have been in mediation to resolve an impasse with this year's contract negotiations. Teachers filled the LTUSD Board meeting earlier this year to plead their case. The agreement still needs to go to them for ratification and adoption.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 200 members of the community gathered last week for a Community Wildfire Preparedness and Evacuation Planning meeting that featured ten panelists for an important discussion on what is on the minds of many.
The goal is to be a community that is wildfire ready, and the speakers went through the ways both they and the citizens of the South Shore can be prepared for wildfire, establish evacuation routes and what the emergency response will be.
Internationally acclaimed illustrator and muralist joins South Tahoe High students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Not only did internationally acclaimed illustrator and artist Rafael López came to South Lake Tahoe last week to speak to local first graders during Gift of Literacy day at Lake Tahoe Community College, but he also stopped by South Tahoe High School (STHS) and worked with students on a large mural.
In just six hours López showed the students how to create not only a work of art from several large blank panels, he also showed how to create community by collaboration and teamwork and celebrate diversity, literacy and aspiration.
19th annual Snapshot Day to unveil conditions in Lake Tahoe and Truckee River

For the past 18 years, volunteers have been monitoring water quality conditions across the Lake Tahoe and Truckee River watersheds, collecting data at a single point in time to better understand the area as a whole. It is a bi-state collaborative that can achieve a larger watershed approach to successful data collection.
On May 17 and 18, 2019, volunteers will once again head out and perform a variety of tests including temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, algae, and nitrogen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local Realtors from South Lake Tahoe recently put on their bunny ears and delivered Easter baskets full of special treats for local youth.
The South Tahoe Association of REALTORS® (STAR) used funds from its Community Involvement Committee resources along with other donated funds to purchase 88 pre-made baskets from the South Lake Tahoe KMart. Volunteers shopped and delivered the baskets to the Family Resource Center and Live Violence Free Center in South Lake Tahoe.

With only two months until summer, South Tahoe High School is getting ready for end-of-year school spirit activities and dances. Students also took the time to prepare for tonight’s Black Light Dance and celebrate Earth Day.
On Campus
This week, students went online to select their schedule for next year.
Black Light Dance is in the student union 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. tonight. Before the dance, the Black Light Rally is being held in the school’s gym at noon.
Harrah’s Casino hosted a job fair Tuesday for students interested in summer jobs.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With three major road construction projects on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe this summer, both residents and visitors alike will have their patience put to the test as they navigate local roads.
Not only will CalTrans have three major projects on Highway 50 between Echo Summit and Al Tahoe Boulevard, but the City of South Lake Tahoe will have their own road projects going on at Sierra Boulevard and Gardner Mountain.
It truly will be a six-month-long "Road Construction Season."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 60 people volunteered at the 5th annual South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Cleanup on Monday, April 23. They removed 750 pounds of trash which equals to 1,047 gallons of littler, as well as over 6,000 cigarette butts in just three hours.
As the warmer weather continues to melt snow, trash is being exposed. Not only is this an unsightly mess it can also be a hazard to wildlife and the lake's clarity.
LTESMS 5th graders take look at South Tahoe High's Career & Technical Education programs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School Career & Technical Education (CTE) students shared their knowledge and expertise with 5th graders from Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School on Thursday, showing them several options the school has in those programs.
South Tahoe High School (STHS) has ten different CTE programs, including sports medicine, auto mechanic, culinary and dental hygiene.
The visiting 5th graders got hand's one experience in all programs and were then treated to a lunch catered y the school's culinary students.

Students at South Tahoe High School returned from a week-long Spring Break tanned and ready for the final two months before summer. This week was quiet as students prepared for the Black Light Dance, prom, AP testing, and the baseball team played at Reno Ace’s stadium.

The Black Light Dance will be held on April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union. Students dress up and paint themselves to match the theme. A surprise student DJ will be featured, so bring your glow sticks, Vikings.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long has been the joke that there are two seasons in Lake Tahoe, winter and roadwork. Both are holding up true for 2019 as we leave a long and heavy winter and prepare for several road construction projects.
On Wednesday, April 24, CalTrans is inviting the public to come out and learn about their three projects scheduled to begin on US 50 in the Lake Tahoe Basin this summer. The public meeting will be in the South Tahoe High School Student Union from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The newlyweds met three years ago in Washington, DC, where Alex works as the LGBTQ Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee and Scott is employed as an Associate Attorney at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, LLP.

University of San Diego student Hirshal Sukha of South Lake Tahoe recently participated in the USD Career Development Center's signature Torero Trek program. Torero Treks are opportunities for USD undergraduate students to engage in career exploration by visiting leading companies across the nation.
Sukha is majoring in Finance and plans to graduate in 2020. He graduated from South Tahoe High in 2016.
The LA Sports Torero Trek on March 22 gave the students the opportunity to network with employers and a few Torero alumni at the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Dodgers.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The threat of wildland fires grows in California and the Lake Tahoe Basin every year. They are becoming larger, more destructive and deadly than ever before. Do you know what to do in case of fire?
The public needs to be prepared when wildfire strikes. The Camp Fire in November 2018 was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history to date. It burned 153,336 acres, destroyed 18,804 buildings and killed 85 people. The center of that fire was Paradise, California, They had held city-wide fire drills and appeared to be prepared.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at 1275 Meadow Crest Drive to discuss proposed rate increases.
Most of South Lake Tahoe’s water and sewer system was built in the 1950s and 1960s. Much of this infrastructure needs to be upgraded, repaired or replaced.

The 30th annual Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra's (SITS) Elegant Evening is just one week away. On Saturday, April 13 join over 400 over your friends at the special event which includes dancing, a sit-down dinner, wine and vodka tasting, a silent auction, Elegant Business Baskets and their signature Elegant Bags. It takes place at Harrah's Tahoe from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (and free self-parking validation).

This week at South Tahoe High School included large amounts of caffeine-based drinks, as students crammed for semester midterms. But after today’s tests, Spring Break begins, giving some of us time to regain lost sleep. In sports, a new team is born.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Have you ever wondered who is there to advocate in court for the younger members of our community who are abused, neglected, or at-risk youth?
The Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, are volunteers there to advocate for and empower by speaking up for the needs of children and making a positive impact in their lives.
RAH Hair Studio moves to new location at The Crossing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For ten years the RAH Hair Studio has operated at a location near Sierra Boulevard, but as they enter their second decade, they have moved to a beautiful new space at The Crossing in South Lake Tahoe.
Is was not a normal April Fool's Day when Rah's owner Angela Zajic opened the doors on her new place for the first time. In the works for five months, the new space in The Crossing next to Verde Mexican Rotisserie has been turned into something that looks like it's straight from the pages of Etsy and Pinterest.
