SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 500-lb black bear in South Lake Tahoe who has gained international fame as "Hank the Tank" has been issued a reprieve, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is no longer on a mission to euthanize him if caught.

Just as humans can be exonerated of a crime through DNA evidence, bears also can be off the hook for knocking down garage doors and gaining entry into homes for food.

Fundraiser for young South Lake Tahoe man who suffered a stroke

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 24-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was airlifted to Renown Hospital in Reno on February 5 after suffering a stroke. Wesley Ficklin, a 2016 graduate of South Tahoe High, was at home with what he thought was a cold. It turned out he had COVID-19 and formed a blood clot that went to his brain.

After an extensive brain procedure and time in the ICU, Wesley is now in a rehabilitation center working on getting all of his motor skills back.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives seek to find family, friends of woman found deceased

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Detectives from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office would like to speak with anyone who might have had contact with Trena Bristol. The 56-year-old woman's body was found last week in the remote hills of the southwest Peavine Mountains.

They believe Bristol may have worked in South Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Reno.

Foul play is not suspected but detectives are seeking to speak with anyone who knows, or has had contact with, Bristol in an effort to resolve this case.

Lake Tahoe-Truckee region recognized at the Visit California Poppy Awards

The Lake Tahoe-Truckee region was recognized in five categories and six awards at the Visit California Poppy Awards, more than any other regional destination in the state. The event was held in San Francisco on Feb. 15, 2022, honoring the best and brightest of California tourism during the conclusion of Visit California’s Outlook Forum Conference.

Tube Tahoe fundraiser for South Tahoe Futbol Club

Spend Sunday at TubeTahoe in Meyers and help support the South Tahoe Futbol Club (STFC).

Between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on February 27, tube for 1.5 hours for just $25 instead of the normal $55. People must state they are there for STFC. All funds raised at this rate will be donated to the club that serves over 200 youth in the South Lake Tahoe community.

COVID-19 cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 23 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 26,348. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive. Case rates continue to drop.

There are now 16.2 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county, the lowest in weeks.

Mechanized equipment now allowed when thinning forests on steeper slopes around Lake Tahoe

Forest thinning projects in the Lake Tahoe Basin just got a new partner that will help remove the threat of wildfires in a cheaper and more efficient manner.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board unanimously approved a change to its policy that will now allow mechanical thinning on slopes with a 30-50 percent grade. Prior to today's action, it was only allowed on slopes under a 30 percent grade and anything steeper had to be done by hand crews, pile burning, and aerial logging to protect water quality from potential erosion.

Ashes-to-Go returns to South Lake Tahoe on Ash Wednesday

TRPA decision allows manufacturing, wholesale, and distribution uses in Gateway area of South Lake Tahoe Tourist Core

A decision today by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) governing board will allow the Tahoe Wellness Center to move forward through the City of South Lake Tahoe's cannabis use permit process. By a vote of 12-2, the board approved changes to the Tourist Core Area Plan (TCAP) Tourist Center Gateway District Special Area #1, reversing their previous action. In January 2022, they had voted against the proposed changes, leading the City of South Lake Tahoe to ask for the matter to be brought back before the board for reconsideration.

Temple Bat Yam’s Purim in the Powder returns

North Lake Tahoe Fire crews get 50-75 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from jackknifed truck

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - A truck traveling on SR28 Tuesday on icy and snowy roads jackknifed, causing about 50-75 gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) responded after receiving the call at 12:19 p.m. The initiated immediate cleanup operations on the stretch of road which is adjacent to a drain that leads to a creek that leads to Lake Tahoe.

There are now 17.6 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county. This is the first time the case rate has fallen below 20 since December.

Prescribed burn operations scheduled for Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue prescribed fire operations around Lake Tahoe this week as conditions and weather allow. Jackknifed truck and fuel spill into Lake Tahoe closes SR28/ SR89 around Emerald Bay also closed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At this hour both routes between the north and south shore of Lake Tahoe are closed. A jackknifed truck that was chained up and an unplowed roadway prompted the closure of SR89 around Emerald Bay early this morning, and it remains closed as of 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

NWS looking for citizen rainfall observers during annual March Madness campaign

Rain and snowfall amounts are monitored closely around Lake Tahoe and the rest of Nevada and California. The results play a critical role in determining several things, including drought monitoring for agricultural interest, researching a changing climate, or better forecasting of the severity of fire season. Since the staff of different agencies cannot be everywhere across the county, they rely on volunteers.

The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) helps to fill in these critical rain and snowfall gaps by leveraging the public.

“Save Our Snow” campaign to raise awareness of changing winters at Lake Tahoe

City of South Lake Tahoe hires new sustainability coordinator

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Lake Tahoe City Manager, Joe Irvin, has appointed Sara Letton to the newly created position of sustainability coordinator. She will start on February 28.

“The addition of the sustainability coordinator to my team is a significant advancement toward achieving our Climate Action Plan (CAP) initiatives. Implementation of the CAP is a top priority for the City, so I’m excited to see this move forward with even greater intention and speed,” said Irvin.

Storm starting to move out after first decent snowfall in 2022

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It wasn't a major storm, but winds and snow did pass over the Lake Tahoe Basin, dropping over a foot of new snow at local ski resorts. Another 2-5" of snow at lake level is possible by the time the weather system exits tonight.

Road controls remain on most Sierra highways, and there are some closures.

SR89 around Emerald Bay is closed as of 10:45 a.m. Tuesday due to snow. There were two incidents with stuck vehicles, a delivery truck with chains, and a Jeep.

The scholarship is for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) seniors attending either a two-year or four-year college or trade school immediately following high school graduation.

Winter Weather Advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe Monday night-Tuesday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first of two slider weather systems to pass over the Sierra overnight dropping 2-4" of snow over the Lake Tahoe Basin, but made its presence known more in the Reno/North Valleys area where 3-7" fell.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin starting at 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 21, ending Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.

In the meantime, enjoy the sun that is peaking out over Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe bear "Hank the Tank" gaining world-wide attention

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 500-lb black bear known for breaking into Tahoe Keys homes is gaining worldwide attention after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) positioned traps in the neighborhood to try and catch him. The estimated 10-year-old is known as Hank the Tank and Jake, depending on who you talk to, but after a social media post by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) the name "Hank The Tank" is now trending around the globe and gaining notoriety through hundreds of newspaper articles, television news programs, and social media posts.

South Lake Tahoe now has a state wrestling champ. Jesus "Chuy" Chavarin dominated in the 285-pound weight class at the 2022 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Class 3A tournament in Boulder on Saturday. He defeated Dylan Spencer of Boulder City in the final match.

Lake Tahoe forecast: A brief return of winter to start the week ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Yes, that is the word "snow" in the forecast for Lake Tahoe this week. A slider-type system will move into the region overnight tonight through Wednesday, bringing with it periods of snow showers, travel difficulties, and much colder temperatures. As it leaves, a gradual warming and drying trend is on tap for the end of the week into the start of next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

A Lake Wind Advisory is up for Sunday until 9:00 p.m. Southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected. Waves 1 to 3 feet.

Changing of the guard at the Tallac Historic Site

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A glimpse of a bygone era is just a couple of miles from South Lake Tahoe, spread over 74 acres with 19 historic structures including three rustic mansions dating from 1873 to the 1920s.

This preserved area is the Tallac Historic Site and was once heralded as the "Grandest Resort in the World" at its beginnings in the late 1800s. Now what remains are three rustic mansions that were once the summer retreats for three of San Francisco Bay Area's socially elite families - the Tevis family, the Baldwins, and the Hellers.

New DWR website pinpoints water conditions from state level down to street addresses

We sell them to peers during our lunch hour and deliver their purchased orders to friends with a Love Bug attached by a string. The best part is that the money goes to a charity that the club selects.

Early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe destroys mobile home and trailer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A mobile home and travel trailer are a total loss after an early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe.

At 6:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2022, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a call of a structure fire on E Street across the street from the climbing gym. South Lake Tahoe Police Department got to the scene first and said there was a fully engulfed structure. SLTFR found heavy fire on the back porch of one home, a fully engulfed travel trailer, and an occupied 5th wheel taking on significant heat that was close to igniting.

Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival returns this summer

The popular summer music event, Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival, has officially announced the date for its annual gathering of Reggae music lovers at the lake. It will be held on July 24 at the outdoor arena at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe holiday forecast: Warm, abundant sunshine leading to wind/snow and dropping temps

Column: Forest health and climate change

When it comes to weather, normal has become an elusive term. On the ground here in Tahoe, it feels like the only things that can pierce our prolonged drought are occasional debilitating storms. Trees weakened by drought can falter under layers of ice and snow from wet storms, causing widespread power and communication outages that can last for days. Meanwhile, “surreal” winter wildfires near Big Sur and Laguna Beach remind us that fire seasons don’t really end anymore.

South Tahoe High sends record 7 athletes to 3A State Wrestling Championships

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seven local wrestlers are on their way to Southern Nevada for the state wrestling tournament Saturday, February 19, the most ever representing South Tahoe High School (STHS).

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) office of South Lake Tahoe will be holding a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) checkpoint on Saturday, February 19, 2022. The checkpoint will be set up in the unincorporated area of El Dorado County at 8:00 p.m. and run until about 2:00 a.m. Sunday.
