South Lake Tahoe forecast: Warming temps and chance of rain and thunderstorms by next weekend

During the coming week, there will be a steady warmup that will exacerbate snowmelt and cause stream and river rise regionwide. Most areas will be dry for the early part of the week, then shower and thunderstorm chances arrive as early as Thursday afternoon through next weekend.

Over 300,000 birds migrated over El Dorado County overnight

At its peak at 1 a.m. Sunday, 170,300 birds were in flight. Since migrating birds regularly fly up to 10,000 feet above the ground, we don't normally see them though the birds overnight were at an average of 3,900 feet.
Seasonal timing and weather conditions dramatically impact their distributions, but this week has had excellent conditions for normal patterns.

All community members are invited to attend. The event goes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Cuppa Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe. They are located in the Crossing at Tahoe Valley, 2054 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

They now have over $62,000 to give back to women and children of the South Lake Tahoe area through scholarships, grants, awards, summer book programs, and financial support for nonprofits.
It started with the inaugural Mad Hatter Tea Party at Valhalla on April 30. One hundred guests joined in the fun which included a photo booth, fabulous decorations, costumes, tea, food, mimosas, and a raffle.
Community attends 6th annual Wildfire Safety Expo in South Lake Tahoe

Activities and information filled the booths that lined the school's parking lot which was also filled with first responder and agency vehicles.
As wildfire behavior progressively becomes more ferocious, learning how to live in a mountain town is important. This means everyone needs to be extra vigilant with preparedness.
Local artist adds to collection at Welcome Home Shoppe

The three new pieces of art all depict our favorite Tahoe bears and one giclee available.
"Lori is one of our talented local artists and we are blessed to have her," said the store on social media.

Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe opens for 77th season
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/13/2023 - 9:53amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1946, the Tahoe Trout Farm has been providing fishing experiences for both South Lake Tahoe visitors and locals. They open for the 2023 season on Saturday, May 13.
The first delivery of trout arrived this past week. They are normally able to get the gates open before now, but the heavy snowfall put many things in the Sierra behind.
Owners Jim and Jackie Vallier, long-time locals, bought the property in 2012 to make sure its historic fishing spot stayed so more generations could enjoy what is a family tradition to many.
South Lake Tahoe home a total loss after early morning fire
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/13/2023 - 9:19amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe destroyed a home on Blue Lake Avenue along Trout Creek. A 4:22 a.m. Saturday, May 13, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were called to the home which was unoccupied at the time.
Flames were seen several feet into the sky upon arrival of first responders. Fire personnel were able to keep the damage to the home and the historic Knox Johnson cabin next door appeared to have no damage.

City of South Lake Tahoe begins retrofitting project to create dark sky-compliant lighting
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/12/2023 - 1:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe has begun phase one of converting pedestrian lights along the US 50 corridor to dark sky-compliant light fixtures. These new lights restrict upward-directed light, have a low color temperature, and reduce the impact of light in the night sky.
The City owns, operates, and maintains approximately 700 pedestrian light fixtures and approximately 200 metal halide pedestrian light fixtures along roadways, walkways, parks, and trail networks. In almost all cases, the existing LED fixtures are rated at 4,000k color temperature.
Volunteer drivers sought for home delivered meals program

UC Davis TERC is hosting its next Science Speaks lecture The Last Area with Dr. Warwick Vincent at Granlibakken Tahoe on May 18.
In a recent commentary published in the journal Science, it was reported that the northern edge of the Canadian Arctic archipelago and Greenland is where the world’s oldest and thickest ice is found (Radio Canada International; December 2, 2020). It was also reported that this will be the last refuge for ice-dependent species. The commentary was titled, “Witnessing Ice Habitat Collapse in the Arctic.”

100-year-old steam engine leads train during 48th season of Virginia Truckee Railroad

The scenic train ride departs daily from the original Virginia City depot where millionaires and miners departed 150 years ago. The historic 35-minute ride over the original 1869 route departs once an hour starting at 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs through October. Adult fares are $16 to $19 and $8 for children ages 5-12. Kids aged four and under ride free. Tickets are available at the depot, or reserve space online at virginiatruckee.com.

They will be in Student Services on June 1 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., the school's flex/lunchtime, as well as after school until 5 p.m. on the same date.
This is the only time Sidestreet will be on campus for measurements to secure an order for a rental before prom. Payments are required at the time of order.
Change to South Lake Tahoe arts and craft show ordinance in the works

The conference was focused on promoting positive relationships, school climate and culture, and safety for all students.
The LTESMS team was comprised of teachers from various grade levels, elementary site counselors, and the school's principal.
They used the unique opportunity at the conference to expand their knowledge and come back to share their insights with colleagues, students, and the community.

The Tahoe Valley Talent Show will begin at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Valley School Theater and is free and open to the public. The Talent Show features the unique talents of 3rd-5th grade students, along with a staff act. This is the annual fundraiser for the Tahoe Valley Scholarship.

It's natural to feel strong emotions when pregnant and just after delivering a baby. Some may feel elated while others may feel sad, or a mixture of both. Many new mothers experience "baby blues:” feelings of sadness, impatience, or irritability after birth that last for a week or two. For some women, feelings of sadness are much more intense and elongated. These intense feelings are called postpartum depression, or PPD.

Vikingsholm trail from SR89 to Emerald Bay temporarily closed due to hazardous conditions

Each Sunday in May, Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Singer/songwriter Bryan Bielanski is on a tour of the United States to promote his new album, Bryan's Super Happy Fun Time 3. He will be in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, May 9 on stage at the Social House Deli in the Heavenly Village from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/07/2023 - 3:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An incoming low-pressure system brings with it a Lake Wind Advisory which is in effect on Monday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected. Waves 1 to 3 feet with the highest waves from mid-lake to north and east shores.
There are additional chances for showers and thunderstorms across northeast California and northwest Nevada Monday with chances spreading farther south on Tuesday before warmer and drier conditions settle in after midweek, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be another special needs community night on Thursday, May 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lake Tahoe AleWorx.
The night provides parents and families of special needs children to gather to share, support, connect and celebrate. The evening is for the whole family and there is free pizza for the kids.
Meet others who can share resources they have found helpful along their journies.
Lake Tahoe AleWorx is located in the Crossing at Tahoe Valley, 2050 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
