Sorensen’s Resort Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra history series on Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m. This new program includes a slide show, The Big Bang.

The incredible, true, and bizarre story of a calculating and disgruntled gambler, and his attempt to extort three million dollars from the historic Harvey’s Casino Lake Tahoe casino in August of 1980.

The 55-minute program is free and open to the public and will be inside the café at the Resort on CA Hwy 88.

Summer Job Fair in South Lake Tahoe - students and businesses can still sign up

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Learning Haven (TLH) is hosting a Student Summer Job Fair on Wednesday, May 10 from 6:45 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (1100 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe). This will be a free one-stop shopping event where students can leave with a summer job!

There will be over 25 local businesses there, all looking for summer employees. TLH will help teens create a simple resume, complete applications, interview, and complete their work permits.

In just 2.5 hours, students can leave with their perfect summer job.

Winter makes a "brief" return at Lake Tahoe to start off the week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another cold storm moves into the region Monday into Tuesday bringing gusty winds, significantly cooler temperatures, and
chances for rain and snow showers (sorry about the "s" word).

There is another Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe from 1 p.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) said winds from the southwest are expected during this time - 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet.

Joint meeting scheduled for Lake Tahoe Unified School District and Lake Tahoe Community College trustees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Education is holding two special meetings this week, one of which is a joint meeting with the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees.

On Monday, April 17, the meeting is a closed session with one agenda item, public employee performance evaluation for the superintendent. The meeting starts at 3 p.m. but is not open to the public and not available on Zoom.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on multiple charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Saturday morning and has been booked into the El Dorado County Jail on multiple charges. Officer Simon with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) made a traffic stop on Stateline Avenue after seeing a vehicle that had a suspended registration.

Douglas County community services director recognized with prestigious state award

Flood Watch in place this weekend as temperatures warm up in the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flood Watch for portions of California and western Nevada, including the greater Lake Tahoe area; Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra counties; Surprise Valley; the greater Reno, Carson City, Minden area; and Mineral and southern Lyon counties. El Dorado County road maintenance crews begin tackling Lake Tahoe roads

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - After the epic winter of 2022-23, roads around Lake Tahoe have seen the effects with large potholes and crumbling pavement on many streets. Caltrans, the City of South Lake Tahoe, and El Dorado County all have roadways they are responsible for on the South Shore, and all have started their repair work.

House fire in South Lake Tahoe displaces family

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe home is a total loss after a Tuesday evening fire on Heather Lake Road.

At 11:23 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to the single-story home to find a fully developed fire. It was knocked down quickly but the damage had already been extensive.

Motorists will see single-lane closures on Kingsbury Grade as NDOT begins road work

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Single lane closures with travel delays will be in place on weekdays from April 13-28 on Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) in Douglas County as the Nevada Department of Transportation repairs weather-related roadside erosion.

Beginning Thursday, April 13 through April 28, one lane will be closed on Kingsbury Grade five miles up from Foothill Road weekdays between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. While the majority of delays will be brief, motorists should anticipate up to 30-minute travel delays as traffic flaggers alternate directions of traffic through the work zone.

Concerns prompt joint letter to South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A joint letter from four local organizations to the South Lake Tahoe City Council and city management was sent Monday, stating concern about the possibility under discussion of more taxes, including a possible tax on empty homes and buildings and a raise on Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT). North Tahoe Community Alliance awards $515,000 for 2023 events including July 4 drone show

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Funds generated by the businesses that voted to form the North Lake Tahoe Tourism Business Improvement District (NLT-TBID) have been awarded in support of special events that will take place in the region in 2023. In total, $515,000 will contribute to events that bring the character and spirit of North Lake Tahoe to life for residents and visitors and support the local business community.

Special Olympics Plunge moved to May due to snow at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Special Olympics of Northern Nevada has moved the 2023 South Lake Tahoe Plunge into the lake to May 13. Due to the winter and vast amounts of snow still on the ground, Round Hill Pines could not safely host the event on April 22 as originally planned.

Jumping into Lake Tahoe at any time is cold, but with snow still lining the lake, and melting snow filling it up, it is even colder during winter and spring.

Foo Fighters add Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena to its 2023 tour

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Foo Fighters are heading to Lake Tahoe when they make a tour stop at the outdoor concert series at Harveys Tahoe on August 10 at 7 p.m. The multiple award-winning band just added stops on their 2023 tour with the South Shore benefitting from the addition as the band heads to the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco.

Prescribed burn operations to continue around Lake Tahoe

If conditions remain favorable, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will resume prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. The Nevada Division of Forestry and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are scheduled to burn hand piles on the East Shore beginning Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Ignitions typically begin around 10 a.m. and smoke will be present.

Lake Tahoe’s clarity the best since 1980s, but is more needed to keep Tahoe blue?

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - For the last five months of 2022, Lake Tahoe was the clearest it has been since the 1980s and much of that is due to the resurgence of the lake’s native zooplankton, said the U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC).

TERC and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency released the annual report on lake clarity Monday, a report showing praise for the tiny zooplankton for providing a natural clean-up crew to help restore the lake’s famous blue waters.

South Lake Tahoe pothole plans laid out as temperatures rise

Several roads have been damaged from the impacts of the endless winter and its severe storms, and the City of South Lake Tahoe has laid out its road repair plan.

Raley's will not reopen its Stateline location in South Lake Tahoe due to damaged roof

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Raley's at Stateline will not be reopening, officials said Monday.

The store had announced previously their lease would expire on June 30 as management was unable to "come to an agreement with the landlord to extend after offering several collaborative solutions."

NDOT prepares for roadwork on US50, and State Routes 28 and 431 this summer

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has a major project planned for US50 at Warrior Way this summer, along with the third season of a multi-year project to help preserve pavement on sections of State Routes 431 and 28 near Incline Village.

Work is expected to commence on the projects on May 1.

Two-vehicle collision near Bridal Veil Falls injures 12

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A head-on collision near Bridal Veil Falls west of Lake Tahoe injured 12 people Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., first responders were called to a two-vehicle collision just west of the falls on US50. Four people were transported by ambulance to Marshall Medical Center and UC Davis Medical Centers, one person was transported by REACH Air Medical Services Calstar 3 to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, and seven were treated and released on scene.

With a longer ski season this year, Ski California adds prizes to Mountain Safety Guide quiz

The continuous snowfall that has allowed many Ski California member resorts to extend their winter season has also prompted the industry association to restart it's Mountain Safety Guide contest with the unveiling of a robust new prize package. Last month, two winners were selected live on the radio to receive unrestricted 2023-24 Ski California Gold Passes (valued at $3,750 each). To qualify, they had to read the Mountain Safety Guide and complete the quiz at the end with 80 percent or better accuracy.

2nd annual Over The Edge at Harrah's Tahoe to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters

STATELINE, Nev. - Rappellers will be going over the edge at Harrah's Tahoe on June 3, 2023, to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra. The 2nd annual Over the Edge is a way to be challenged and help raise funds for the group that has mentored youth since 1977.

There are different ways to participate - create a team, become a rappeler, donate, or become a sponsor. Each rappeller is required to fundraise a minimum of $1,000 by May 31. The earlier people register the sooner their name will go on the website to start getting donations.

After months of having snow in the forecast, clear and sunny week for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Pleasant spring weather will prevail through Monday as high pressure continues to amplify over the western US. An upper-level trough currently situated over the Gulf of Alaska will shift, with another ridge developing behind the trough on Friday, which will favor a gradual warming trend into the weekend. Right now the early models are showing signals of another round of cooler and unsettled weather early next week.

But in the meantime, enjoy pleasant temperatures around Lake Tahoe in the coming week, though it will get windy at times.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, South Tahoe Refuse, Clean Tahoe, and Supervisor Brooke Laine have joined together with the help of Leona Allen to disseminate information about coexisting with local wildlife.

The search for food and get wildlife into trouble unless humans learn how to behave, said Leona.
