Reno has long been known as “The Biggest Little City,” but it wasn’t just the introduction of legalized gambling in 1931 that brought the town its fame. For the first half of the 20th century, hundreds of thousands of people came to the Truckee River town, to get a “quickie” dissolution to their marriage.
Douglas High School student arrested after allegedly making threats to carry out school shooting
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/26/2024 - 9:26pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - At approximately 9:50 a.m. on September 26, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) received an anonymous report of a 14-year-old Douglas High School (DHS) student who made verbal threats in class about coming to school and carrying out a shooting.
The DCSO deputies assigned to DHS, along with school administration, contacted the student. As a result of the investigation, the student was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Facility for making terroristic threats.

It was the first time that the B&B volunteer cooks had ever prepared an Asian Crab Casserole that was served with sticky fried rice, and Asian salad. According to Jared Peabody, a Kirkwood Environmental Compliance team member, the “crab casserole was a win!”

Tahoe dive team takes expertise to Minnesota lake

The primary goal of this project, which was funded by the Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment, was to gain insight about submerged litter, including its movement in and around the lake. The project also involved documenting aquatic invasive species (AIS).

For more than 30 years, TRPA’s Best in Basin award program has annually recognized projects that exhibit outstanding planning and execution and lead the way in regional collaboration and environmental stewardship, according to TRPA. The award winners this year range from forest health projects to citizen science monitoring.

This type of event is a customary way to celebrate a significant milestone during the construction of a new building when the final steel beam is put in place.

Taylor Creek Invasive Species Project in South Lake Tahoe nearing completion
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/25/2024 - 3:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) will begin removing specialized mats, called bottom barriers, from Taylor and Tallac creeks and marshes in early October, the agencies said Tuesday. They have been working together since 2021 to remove a 17-acre infestation of aquatic invasive plants in the marsh in the Southwest portion of the Tahoe Basin.

“Sky” was born on Nov. 18, 1954 to G. Warren Wheeler III and Grace Evelyn Conley in Flushing, New York. Sky graduated from Central Valley High School in Valley Stream, NY in 1972. He completed his undergraduate studies at Manhattanville in Harrison, NY, and went on to earn his JD from Miami Law School.

Middlebrook selected to fill former South Lake Tahoe council member's seat

Councilmember Scott Robbins said he didn't see why they needed to make a move now with the election so close. By law, the council had to appoint someone before the election to ensure there is a quorum at each meeting and that city business could move forward without delay.

The date coincides with National Coffee With A Cop Day, a day celebrated on the first Wednesday of October. The day's purpose is to encourage positive interactions and communication between law enforcement and the public.

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center coordinates the visit and has been booking free appointments for 2024 since January.
This year, that visit is on Saturday, September 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bijou Community School Cafeteria but all appointments have already been booked.

There will be a dry/mild pattern this week with light winds through Tuesday with increased southwest winds likely Wednesday with isolated areas of fire weather concerns across northeast California and northwest Nevada. Temperatures will remain around 3-7 degrees above season averages this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Bread & Broth resumed its B&B 4 Kids (BBRK) School Year Weekend Food Bag program earlier this month and there is room for more kids to start benefitting from a bag of food each week. The bags contain three dinners, two breakfasts, two lunches, fresh fruit, and protein-enriched snacks to fill the weekend when free school meals aren't available.

World’s largest Sugar Pine discovered in Yosemite
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/21/2024 - 5:50pmOn August 25, 2024, big tree hunters Michael Taylor, Carl Casey and Martin Crawford measured a massive sugar pine that they knew about in Yosemite National Park. The team calculated that it was not only the largest known sugar pine, but the largest pine tree on Earth.
I recently spoke with Taylor – who is the original and lead “discoverer” of this and many other champion trees and has recently pioneered that use of LiDAR to find tall trees – about how he found this incredible sugar pine. He initially put it very simply and said, “It has an unusual background, actually.”
Edgewood Tahoe to undergo clubhouse remodel

In partnership with Plant Construction Company, LP and Collaborative Design Studio, the project will be begin October 19, 2024, with a planned public reopening in June 2025.

Nearly 175 teams came to Tahoe for 2024 Fall CUFA STFC Championship
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/21/2024 - 2:03pmSouth Tahoe Futbol Club experienced the most successful tournament weekend in the club's 38-year history last weekend at the 28th annual Come Up for Air (CUFA) tournament in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline.
Five teams won first-place trophies, and three more claimed runner-up finishes in the tournament that attracted nearly 175 teams in the bi-state event. During its three tournament weekends in spring and fall, CUFA attracts over 450 teams annually and provides an economic benefit of $2.5 million to local businesses.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Department is bringing holiday fun to the community when they host the inaugural Pumpkin Patch Splash on Sunday, October 13. This is a unique and festive event where kids pick their pumpkins straight from the pool! After choosing your pumpkin, the kids will head over to the Decoration Station to create their own masterpiece.

Pumpkin Tic-Tac-Toe

The rise in the cost of living was immediately apparent and I, like many others, started to pick up part-time side jobs (in addition to my full-time job). My husband is a local electrician and also picks up extra work on the side when he can.
