Due to these challenges, the resort will remain closed for a second day on Saturday.
Both the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County has declared a State of Emergency, and impacts from the weather are widespread from the resort through Lake Tahoe.
Counties reminding all it is illegal to price gouge during a State of Emergency
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/10/2023 - 3:17pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With many homeowners around Lake Tahoe in need of snow removal from roofs during the rain-on-snow event, quotes for services have been seen from what many feel are reasonable, to what many believe are unreasonable. The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office joined Placer County today in reminding the public it is illegal to price gouge during a state of emergency.
"Price gouging for snow removal and other goods and services is illegal and we will hold you accountable," said DA Vern Pierson of the practice during the state of emergency.
STPUD seeks public's help in preventing sewer spills during floods at Lake Tahoe

Do not open manholes. Run sump pumps into the storm drain and not into the sewer system.
Local governments ask for people to not travel to Lake Tahoe this weekend

Road closures and other issues due to flooding and snow
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/10/2023 - 12:28pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With rain in the Lake Tahoe Basin and Carson Valley, roads are being covered with standing water. Some roads are closed due to standing water and other weather-related reasons so research all roads before driving.
US50 between Meyers and Twin Bridges has reopened with no controls. A mud/rock slide near Johnson Pass Road closed the road overnight as they cleared the roadway.
Some South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County offices closed
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/10/2023 - 9:44amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Due to travel impacts from regional flooding, Douglas County offices are closing Friday, but County courts will remain open for normal business hours.
Aside from essential public safety, corrections personnel, and courts, all county offices will close early.
There is currently flooding on many roads around Douglas County. Douglas County Sheriff Daniel Coverley has advised that motorists should avoid travel in unnecessary and non-emergency situations.
Second Serving will be closed Friday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/10/2023 - 9:03amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Bread & Broth Second Serving at Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church in South Lake Tahoe will be closed on Friday.
Due to weather and road conditions, the decision was made to not serve on Friday for the safety of guests and volunteers.
They will resume next Friday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church is located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.

All DCSD Valley Elementary students who were picked up on the bus are being taken to school and families will need to pick them up. If you haven't sent your student to school please keep them at home. Secondary students can return home on the bus or use their usual transportation method to get home.

This move is to support storm response and relief efforts in Butte, El Dorado, Fresno, Humboldt, Imperial, Inyo, Lake, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Stanislaus, Tuolumne, and Yuba counties.
Fire starts after Swiss Mart gas station canopy falls in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/09/2023 - 7:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another canopy at a South Lake Tahoe gas station fell on Thursday evening, this time causing a fire at one of the gas pumps.
The roadway was closed at the Swiss Mart station at 913 Emerald Bay Road as emergency crews responded. The fire has been contained to one pump and there was no damage reported at the building and no injuries.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has extinguished the fire and is still on the scene.
There is no other information available at this time.

El Dorado County and the City of South Lake Tahoe are working together to address the current emergency the area is facing due to a rain-on-snow event.
Another building in South Lake Tahoe suffers roof failure due to snow load

On Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a business at 2226 Eloise on reports the roof collapsed. Upon arrival, they found a roof failure under the snow load. The pressure caused two bay doors to be blown out. It is now red-tagged as it is unstable.
On Thursday, a beam snapped at 2184 Ruth and the South Lake Tahoe building responded.
2023 final year for National Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport, new venue possible

The Reno Air Racing Association’s final Reno-Stead Airport event is set to take place from September 13-17 and will feature the seven classes of air racing plus extraordinary military and civilian demonstrations that fans have come to love as well as a celebration of the event’s almost 60 years in northern Nevada.

This system will impact South Lake Tahoe through the weekend and into next week, so there may be further operation issues.

It is rare when those two types of warnings are issued for the same region at the same time. Both are in effect until 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 11.
All Lake Tahoe agencies are warning the public of the possible issues from a rain-on-snow event.

According to the National Weather Service, “The first system arrives late Thursday and continues Saturday. Heavy precipitation is expected, with high elevation heavy, wet snow.”

Since January 1, 2023, they say hazard calls have accounted for nearly 20 percent of non-EMS incidents.
Firefighters are on a mission to empower the public with information on ways to prevent snow-related emergencies by properly maintaining mountain homes.
Supervisor Laine to ask BOS for postponement of VHR agenda item due to snow and safety concerns

It is currently set for 10 a.m. certain, but Supervisor Brooke Laine, who represents the Lake Tahoe portion of the county, is asking for a postponement.

Prescribed fire operations at Lake Tahoe may resume tomorrow

The Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Incline Village beginning March 7, 2023. Smoke will be present.
The project they will be working on is the Bon Pland Pile Burn at Sand Harbor. This week they plan to burn two acres of hand piles from 10 a.m. Tuesday until Thursday. Hours of ignition are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with smoke production expected from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Heavenly plans delayed opening Monday with limited operations

Access to the mountain will be from the California Base Lodge and Nevada.
They will try to expand lifts and terrain as they can.
Atmospheric River heading to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, snow and rain possible

Expect periods of snow showers through Wednesday. Snow accumulations will be minor in comparison, but are still capable of travel difficulties.
Snow Day for LTUSD and TTUSD students Monday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/05/2023 - 6:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have a snow day again on Monday, March 6. This is due to the heavy snow in South Lake Tahoe over the weekend, and more forecasted Sunday night.
The excessive snow is requiring additional time to make sure school sites are safe for students and staff. City and County snow crews will continue working on clearing roads in the community.
All schools in Tahoe Truckee Unified School District are also closed.

Man pleads "no contest" in killing his infant son in South Lake Tahoe in 2008
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/05/2023 - 4:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An El Dorado County man has been convicted for the 2008 murder of his three-week-old infant son following an investigation revitalized by the El Dorado County Cold Case Homicide Task Force and South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
David Paul DeMartile, Sr. pleaded no contest to second-degree murder before Judge Michael J. McLaughlin on February 24, 2023. A jury trial had been scheduled when the plea was entered.
El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Leikauf declares state of emergency for county
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/05/2023 - 1:30pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Leikauf has proclaimed a local emergency for the current storm situation. It was signed on March 3 and released via social media on March 5, 2023.
This move allows the County to be included in Governor Newsom's State of Emergency and gives the region the possibility of receiving resources for public infrastructure repairs. The county had been left out of the March 1 proclamation for the counties of Amador, Kern, Los Angeles, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Nevada, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Sierra, Sonoma, and Tulare.

Over a foot of fresh snow on Lake Tahoe area roads, I80 closed as well as others Sunday morning
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/05/2023 - 10:44amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Snow-covered roads surround Lake Tahoe and the Sierra after over a new foot or more of new snow fell over the last 24 hours.
US50 over Spooner Summit was closed Sunday morning but it has since reopened, and with I80 closed, all westbound traffic was being diverted from Nevada onto Kingsbury Grade.
Conditions can change quickly since the forecast is snow all day Sunday and into Monday morning, so search road conditions prior to getting on the road.
As of 10:15 a.m. Sunday:
I80 is closed from Applegate in Placer County to the Nevada state line.
South Lake Tahoe man dies in two-car collision on US50 at Ice House Road
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/04/2023 - 6:37pmAn 83-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has been identified as the person who was killed in a collision on US50 near Ice House Road on Thursday afternoon.
Marvin H. Buchmiller, a long-time advocate for mentally and emotionally challenged members of the South Lake Tahoe community, died after another vehicle crossed into opposing lanes, hitting Buchmiller's Kia Sportage.
Buchmiller had a 52-year-old passenger in his vehicle. That man, who is unidentified, was hospitalized with major injuries. Buchmiller was eastbound heading home after taking his passenger to a doctor's appointment.

Motorists advised of challenging driving conditions as Lake Tahoe area gets another Winter Storm Warning

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno carried the statement, "Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Strong winds may cause tree damage and lead to power outages. Blowing and drifting snow may bring near-zero visibility at times and rapid disorientation if attempting to travel."
Safety tips for residents in snow country from Southwest Gas

The buildup of snow around natural gas meters and piping, as well as falling ice and snow from rooftops, can create hazards for natural gas customers.
Southwest Gas encourages people living in the Lake Tahoe Basin and other areas with heavy snow to take extra precautions to ensure natural gas piping, meters, and outdoor appliances remain safe:
• Do not bury or allow snow to cover any natural gas piping, meters, exhaust vents or appliances.
California and Nevada snowpack measurements show huge gains after recent storms -

On Friday, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) did its monthly snow survey on Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe, the third such manual survey of the season. Staff recorded 116.5 inches of snow and a snow water equivalent of 41.5 inches, which is 177 percent of average for this location on March 3.

Explosion and fire causes extensive damage at South Lake Tahoe home
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/02/2023 - 9:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A brand new home in Meyers exploded on Thursday afternoon, sending flames and smoke into the sky. There were multiple 911 calls to emergency dispatch as neighbors saw the fire and heard the explosion.
Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded to the home on Piute Street, finding it fully engulfed. Several trucks and engines from LVFPD were at the scene, and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was also called in to assist.
