Hard Rock Tahoe murder suspect transferred to Douglas County Jail

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The man accused of killing South Lake Tahoe resident Omar Reye Garcia has been transferred to the Douglas County Jail.

Edgar Julian Delgado of Santa Cruz has been charged with first-degree murder and carrying a concealed weapon. He is being held without bail.

Governor Newsom makes judicial appointments across state, including El Dorado County

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of 14 Superior Court judges on Thursday, one who will be filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Suzanne Kingsbury. The other appointments are for Contra Costa County, Fresno County, Los Angeles County (3), Madera County, Monterey County, Orange County; Sacramento County (2), San Diego County, Santa Barbra County, and Santa Clara County.

John Rice and Sierra-at-Tahoe honored with outstanding community partner award

The El Dorado County School Boards Association (EDCSBA) held its annual awards gala on March 27 at the Cold Springs Country Club. It honored school board members and those who have shown exemplary service to their community and to the success of schools in the county.

City celebrates Emilie Tieslau as honorary mayor of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the evening of Tuesday, March 29, South Tahoe Middle School Student, Emilie Tieslau, served as honorary Mayor at the City Council meeting. After she was presented with a proclamation from Mayor Cristi Creegan, she called the meeting to order and led the pledge of allegiance.

Before the meeting, Emilie had a busy afternoon starting with a tour of City Hall. Next, she met up with the City’s Police K-9 team, toured a fire engine with the City’s firefighters, and viewed snowplows with the City’s Airport Operations team.

Each week the group packs 150 bags of weekend food for children in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. The food insecure kids get meals at school free of charge, but those are not available over the weekend, holidays, or summer and that is where BB4K comes in to help.

Emergency Preparedness Workshop postponed due to weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Emergency Preparedness Workshop at Fire Station #2 originally placed for March 29 has been canceled. The City of South Lake Tahoe is working to reschedule in the next couple of weeks.

Monthly gaming report: South Shore down almost 4% from a year ago, Nevada up 11.15%

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,237,272,530 for the month of January 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released today. This amounts to an 11.5 percent increase compared to January 2022, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,113,133,855. For the fiscal year to date (July 1, 2022 through January 31, 2022), the gaming win has increased by 5.55 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Continued increase in snow-related gas leaks, carbon monoxide emergencies

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Fire agencies around Lake Tahoe are continuing to see an alarming number of gas leaks, Carbon Monoxide (CO) related emergencies, and other hazard-related emergencies resulting from repeated storms and heavy snow. Firefighters continue their mission to empower the public with actions that should be taken to prevent snow-related emergencies.

North Tahoe Fire put out a news release Tuesday, stating they are responding to a steady increase in CO emergencies throughout the region.

Final four in Tahoe Trails Madness

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - It's March Madness not only on the basketball court but also in the Lake Tahoe trail system! The Tahoe Fund created its own bracket to determine the most popular trail around the Lake Tahoe Basin. It started with 16 trails from four regions.

The Final Four are the Eagle Rock Trail (north), Rubicon Trail (west), Marlette Flume Trail (east), and the Star Lake Trail (south).

Registration for Tahoe Institute for Natural Sciences summer camps now open

Registration for all Tahoe Institute for Natural Sciences (TINS) summer camps is now open. Some camps have been filling quickly. Campers will experience the ecosystems of Tahoe as they explore, hike, play games, create nature-themed art, and make new friends. TINS offers camps for children ages 6-17 located on the North Shore, in South Lake Tahoe, and Truckee.

Barton Health honors Dr. Jacob Marquette as Physician of the Year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health staff members and physicians have voted Jacob Marquette, DO, as Barton’s Physician of the Year. Dr. Marquette received a majority of nominations recognizing his outstanding leadership and his caring, compassionate approach to health care. Dr. Marquette is a hospitalist at Barton Memorial Hospital, board certified in family medicine and addiction medicine.

Have you seen the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe's brass bell?

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe is missing its brass bell. The bell was last used at their March 9 General Meeting at Casey's Restaurant at Round Hill. The bell was accidentally left at the restaurant after the meeting and when they went back to look for it, it was gone.

This bell is very important to the club and its members because it has been a part of the club for over 50 years.

Early bird ticket deadline extended for 6th annual Tahoe Brewfest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 6th annual Tahoe Brewfest, to be held on Ski Run Blvd. August 26, 2023, will extend the $45 “Early Bird” ticket through April 7, 2023 at midnight.

Early Bird General Admission tickets will increase by $10 on April 8, 2023, making tickets $55 for unlimited sampling from the admission time of 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. VIP tickets will remain the same at $75 with admission at 11 a.m. and taps opening at 12 p.m.

They are the latest act to book for the popular outdoor series. They come during the American Century Championship at Edgewood which is held July 12-16, 2023.

Lake Tahoe sled hill clean up Saturday nets very little trash

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The League to Save Lake Tahoe sled cleanup event at Spooner Summit on Saturday was "wonderfully uneventful," said the League's Communications Director Chris Joseph.

In years past, numerous plastic sleds and pieces of sleds have been found across the popular sledding hill at the intersection of US50 and SR28.

"Our volunteers found very little trash at the site, which can be attributed to a number of things," said Joseph.

GIVE Tahoe supports nonprofits who work for and within the South Lake Tahoe Area. The GIVE Tahoe Grant is open to all nonprofits, agencies and schools serving the residents and communities of South Lake Tahoe. Proposals of up to $5,000 will be considered. This grant does not have a specific focus allowing the opportunity to respond to South Lake Tahoe’s most important needs.

Special Needs Community Night at Blue Granite Gym

Tahoe Arts Project bringing Caminos Flamencos to local schools this week, public performance Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join the Tahoe Arts Project on Friday, March 31 as they bring the Caminos Flamencos to South Lake Tahoe for a public performance at Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theater at 6 p.m.

After a week of performances in local schools, the Caminos Flamencos is bringing a fun night of music and dance from Spain to the community.

Tickets at the door are $10 for adults, and $5 for children.

As we age, regular physical activity is recommended to remain healthy, and with a regular exercise program, we can reduce our risk for chronic diseases and injury. But how do we keep it fun and interesting?

Another Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe Monday night - Wednesday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a winter of endless cold and snowy days, there is once again a storm system headed to Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Monday, March 27 at 6 p.m. to Wednesday, March 29 at 5 p.m.

Heavy snow is possible with otal snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet west of Highway 89, 8 to 18 inches in the Tahoe basin and above 5500 feet west of Highway 395, and 2 to 6 inches below 5500 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in valley locations with up to 100 mph along Sierra ridges.

Leonard G. Funderburk ~ 1943 - 2023

Leonard G. Funderburk was born in Washington, North Carolina on July 22, 1941. He entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ suddenly on February 24, 2023.

Leonard was a long-time resident of South Lake Tahoe. He graduated from Canoga Park High School in Canoga Park, Calif. He enjoyed sports and coached a women's softball team for A & K Plumbing in the 1970s. He also appreciated vintage cars, especially Corvettes.

Seven years later. the last of those responsible for 2016 South Lake Tahoe murder heads to prison

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been 2,607 days since Dennis "Spike" Wright, Jr. was killed in front of the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe on January 30, 2016, and on Friday the last of the men accused of killing Spike was sentenced to prison.

Domenic Seanlee Randolph, 29, pleaded guilty earlier this month to manslaughter, and on Friday, March 24, 2023, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for manslaughter and other charges.

Gabriel Ruedorfer Cozzaglio ~ 1929 - 2023

Gabriel "Gabi" Ruedorfer Cozzaglio was born in Germany on January 29, 1929, and died on March 22, 2023. She had three older brothers and a younger sister who passed away before her.

She lived in the extreme of World War II and remembered having to be quiet when bombs were going off. Her mother would go out to protest the war and the family always prayed that she would come home and be safe. Gabi was her dad's favorite and she said he always spoiled her. She was the smallest in the family and when clothes or shoes were handed down she stuffed the shoes with paper so she could wear them.

South Lake Tahoe man murdered at bar inside Hard Rock Hotel, suspect arrested

1:25 PM UPDATE: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) held a press conference a short time ago to provide updates on today's shooting at the Hard Rock Hotel in Stateline, Nev. According to DCSO Sheriff Dan Coverly, his department was called to the hotel just after 8 a.m. on a report of an active shooter.

Assessor says El Dorado County homeowners may be eligible for property tax relief

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County Assessor Jon DeVille is reminding property owners in the path of the recent torrential rainstorms and snowstorms that they may be eligible for tax relief.

“The recent spate of winter storms have caused significant damage and in some cases devastating losses," Assessor Jon DeVille said. “I want to remind property owners that you may be eligible for property tax relief that could save you money on your taxes as you move forward.”

TRPA approves plans for Lake Tahoe Community College dormitory

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its meeting on Wednesday, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board unanimously approved a 33-room, 100-bed dormitory for Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) in South Lake Tahoe.

The dorms will be deed-restricted for low-income LTCC students from the Lake Tahoe region and California only. The target date for opening is July 1, 2025.

South Tahoe High's sports medicine students place high in national competition

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School's (STHS) Sports Medicine students attended the National High School Sports Medicine Competition in Los Angeles last weekend and came home with several trophies.

As a team, STHS placed third out of over 40 schools and Rossi Bonev’s individual score placed her fifth out of over 600 students. The Tahoe students also participated in a Sports Med Jeopardy contest, placing third overall!

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe to be acquired by Fertitta Entertainment

STATELINE, Nev. - The Hard Rock in Lake Tahoe will soon be a Golden Nugget, according to an announcement today from Fertitta Entertainment, LLC. The company, which also owns the Chart House chain and the Houston Rockets, announced they signed a purchase agreement to acquire the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada, including land and business situated on twenty-four acres from Paragon Gaming for an undisclosed price.

The transaction is expected to close within the next seven to twelve months, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Douglas County Sheriff seeks public's help in identifying armed robbery suspects

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for assistance in identifying two individuals suspected of an armed robbery at the Home Depot located at 921 Jacks Valley Road on March 9, 2023.

The suspects left in a silver 2017 Ford Fusion with California license plate 9BBS792.
