“The addition of the sustainability coordinator to my team is a significant advancement toward achieving our Climate Action Plan (CAP) initiatives. Implementation of the CAP is a top priority for the City, so I’m excited to see this move forward with even greater intention and speed,” said Irvin.
Storm starting to move out after first decent snowfall in 2022
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/22/2022 - 10:49amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It wasn't a major storm, but winds and snow did pass over the Lake Tahoe Basin, dropping over a foot of new snow at local ski resorts. Another 2-5" of snow at lake level is possible by the time the weather system exits tonight.
Road controls remain on most Sierra highways, and there are some closures.
SR89 around Emerald Bay is closed as of 10:45 a.m. Tuesday due to snow. There were two incidents with stuck vehicles, a delivery truck with chains, and a Jeep.

Winter Weather Advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe Monday night-Tuesday morning

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin starting at 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 21, ending Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
In the meantime, enjoy the sun that is peaking out over Lake Tahoe.
South Lake Tahoe bear "Hank the Tank" gaining world-wide attention

The estimated 10-year-old is known as Hank the Tank and Jake, depending on who you talk to, but after a social media post by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) the name "Hank The Tank" is now trending around the globe and gaining notoriety through hundreds of newspaper articles, television news programs, and social media posts.

"It is great to see a staple family event on the South Shore that brings families to the basin from everywhere," said Gary Casteel, CEO Trans Sierra Investments / Shops at Heavenly Village.
The event was started by Dreu Murin of Dreu Murin Productions in 2021 in the midst of COVID and was a huge success even with all the protocols.

Jesus "Chuy" Chavarin dominated in the 285-pound weight class at the 2022 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Class 3A tournament in Boulder on Saturday. He defeated Dylan Spencer of Boulder City in the final match.
Lake Tahoe forecast: A brief return of winter to start the week ahead

A slider-type system will move into the region overnight tonight through Wednesday, bringing with it periods of snow showers, travel difficulties, and much colder temperatures. As it leaves, a gradual warming and drying trend is on tap for the end of the week into the start of next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
A Lake Wind Advisory is up for Sunday until 9:00 p.m. Southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected. Waves 1 to 3 feet.

This preserved area is the Tallac Historic Site and was once heralded as the "Grandest Resort in the World" at its beginnings in the late 1800s. Early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe destroys mobile home and trailer
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/18/2022 - 8:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A mobile home and travel trailer are a total loss after an early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe.
At 6:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2022, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a call of a structure fire on E Street across the street from the climbing gym. South Lake Tahoe Police Department got to the scene first and said there was a fully engulfed structure. SLTFR found heavy fire on the back porch of one home, a fully engulfed travel trailer, and an occupied 5th wheel taking on significant heat that was close to igniting.

The popular summer music event, Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival, has officially announced the date for its annual gathering of Reggae music lovers at the lake. It will be held on July 24 at the outdoor arena at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe.
The final touches are being put on a massive artist line-up which will be announced shortly. On the ground here in Tahoe, it feels like the only things that can pierce our prolonged drought are occasional debilitating storms. Trees weakened by drought can falter under layers of ice and snow from wet storms, causing widespread power and communication outages that can last for days. Meanwhile, “surreal” winter wildfires near Big Sur and Laguna Beach remind us that fire seasons don’t really end anymore.

Public effort to save South Lake Tahoe bear working; Colorado sanctuary may be in his future
Submitted by admin on Wed, 02/16/2022 - 11:39amUPDATE 2/16 5:00 p.m.: The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has said they are exploring all options on the future of the large urbanized black bear. They said they looked into Colorado but it appears at this time that option is a "non-starter," according to CDFW spokesperson Peter Tira.
Colorado told CDFW that moving a wild bear to the state requires director approval from their parks and wildlife agency, which has not happened in many years. At this time they will not accept the bear, said Tira.

Court rules against proposed Martis Valley West development

The court ruled in the groups' favor in a long-running fight against big development on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.
The court's decision is the latest in a string of conservation victories in the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Basin and a major setback to the would-be developers of the Martis Valley West proposal.
Elusive bear not caught in Tahoe Keys, public trying to stop him from being killed

So far, the big guy has been elusive and has not come close to the traps.
As reported on Feb. 9, CDFW says the fully urbanized black bear who has been calling South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Keys his home turf for years is going to be trapped, removed, and killed due to his behavior.
After weeks of dry conditions, road controls up around Lake Tahoe

Expect snow to continue Tuesday morning, tapering off this afternoon when partly sunny skies are expected with a high near 37. Northeast wind 10 to 15 mph. The next forecast snow is Sunday.

COVID-19 daily cases for South Lake Tahoe and rest of El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/14/2022 - 5:42pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 87 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 25,834. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive. Case rates continue to drop.
There are now 30.3 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

The Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 23-20. The best scenarios for sportsbooks are for the favorite team to win but not cover the spread and for the two teams to score under the total predicted by the casino.
Tahoe Women's Community Fund grant cycle opens - $100,000 available
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/14/2022 - 11:54amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each year, the members of the Tahoe Women's Community Fund select areas of need for its annual grant cycle. Members donate to the fund along with contributions from the community for its collective giving campaign.
This year there is $100,000 to distribute to nonprofits serving the South Shore (both California and Nevada) who address the focus areas.
The areas of focus and impact are:
$40,000 for Housing and Basic Needs (four or more up to $10,000 each)
$30,000 for Youth and Education (three or more up to $10,000 grants)
