Slow traffic on US50 to and from South Lake Tahoe as crews continue to work on fallen rock

The line of traffic streaming into South Lake Tahoe on US50 has been slow moving all day Saturday. The cause is from crews working at Echo Summit to continue cleanup of Friday's large rockslide.
Saturday's work is expected to wrap up around 6:00 p.m. Until the it is one-way traffic control through the work zone. More of the same is expected on Sunday.
Monitor Pass now open; Caltrans working to open all other mountain passes by Memorial Day

Caltrans crews are working on all Sierra mountain passes in order to have them all open by Memorial Day. District 10 has been clearing snow and debris from mountain passes for several generations, tackling the task each spring on Ebbetts Pass/State Route 4, Monitor Pass/SR-89 and Sonora Pass/SR-108.
Removing snow and ice, pushing aside fallen trees and dead branches, dislodging boulders and mounds of rocks … those are just some of the challenges awaiting crews as they head up the highway to higher altitude.

Hyundai has transformed their bold new Elantra into a champion prizefighter of the compact sedan world. It really is that good.
Cheap (sorry, I meant affordable) cars aren't meant or supposed to be exciting, but I found myself rather stirred when the newly redesigned model was first unveiled, and even more so when I first saw it in the flesh this past month at Sonoma Raceway when I picked it up. Could Hyundai make a reasonable car that people would genuinely want? Well, they did, and it's the new Elantra.

Douglas County commissioners set to vote on new COVID-19 recovery plan

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of Commissioners will review a plan at their April 15 meeting to transition from State control of COVID response and recovery to local control.
If approved, the plan, titled the Douglas County COVID-19 Recovery Plan, will be submitted to the State COVID-19 Task Force in accordance with the Nevada Roadmap to Recovery Transition Plan. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak said counties with an approved plan could take control of their own recovery plans on May 1, 2021.

STATELINE, Nev. - Another lucky Caesars Rewards member has hit a large progressive jackpot at Lake Tahoe. Robert Davis of Waco, Texas was visiting Harrah's Tahoe on April 8 when he hit a Mega Progressive Jackpot on Blazing 7’s (diamonds) for $100,840.67.
This was the second day in a row that a Mega Progressive Jackpot hit at a Caesars Lake Tahoe property. On Wednesday a man from Waterville, Minnesota won $592,470 at Harveys Lake Tahoe.
One lane opens after Echo Summit rock slide closes US50

7:20PM Update: US50 over Echo Summit is now open in both directions. Crews used dynamite to blow up the rocks, making them small enough to move off the roadway.
3:15PM Update: One lane has reopened on US50 over Echo Summit. Expect slow moving until Caltrans crews are able to get both lanes moving.

Man pleads guilty to murder in 2018 shooting of South Lake Tahoe neighbor over motorcycle noise

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man has pleaded guilty to the first degree premeditated murder of a former neighbor, Christopher William Kitchen.
At 5:30 p.m. on June 30, 2018, Roy Figaro shot Kitchen twice in the street in front of the Tahoe Verde Mobile Home Park and police officers tended to Kitchen's care while Figaro went back into his home across the street from the shooting.
Nurses notify Barton Health of their intent to strike for two days

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Nurses Association (CNA) served Barton Health this week with a ten-day notice of their registered nurses (RNs) intent to strike for two days, April 16-17, 2021.
Barton and CNA have been at the bargaining table, negotiating a contract for the first time since the South Lake Tahoe nurses voted to unionize in November 2017.
Tahoe Women's Community Fund grants 14 non-profits with total of $100,000

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF) has announced its 2021 grant recipients. This year, 14 non-profit organizations in the South Shore Community were funded for a total of $100,000.
Normally the funds are handed out during a Grants Gala, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, it has been canceled. It its place will be a virtual presentation over a two-week period, starting around May 20.
Project summaries of all recipients are available on the TWCF website, tahoewomenscommunityfund.org.
South Lake Tahoe Police identify man killed in shooting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has identified one of the two men involved in Wednesday's shooting on Sierra Boulevard.
Sacramento resident David Hunter, 24, died from his injuries after being airlifted to Reno.
The second person involved is a South Lake Tahoe resident. His name has not been released as he is still in critical condition at Barton Hospital. Police investigators will be interviewing him once his condition improves.

STATELINE, Nev. -A lucky visitor from Waterville, Minnesota won $592,470 at Harveys Lake Tahoe with a Mega Progressive Jackpot on Three Card Poker on the evening of April 7, 2021.
Caesars Rewards Member James Snyder, was visiting with his wife and good luck charm, Annette. The Snyder’s “OMG” moment happened as soon as the cards were flipped and a royal flush was showing. They said they are going to enjoy their winnings for now, and hope that the jackpot gives them the freedom to stop working part-time.
Tahoe Institute for Natural Science releases new Nature Activity book

The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) has released its latest Tahoe Nature Activity Book. It will be distributed to every student in Grades 3 through 5 in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District and made freely available to other schools and districts in the Truckee-Tahoe region. The book helps enhance the current science curriculum with fun and challenging activities centered around the natural wonders of Lake Tahoe. Topics include “How to Draw A Western Tanager,” “Tahoe’s Rockin’ Geology,” and “Tahoe at Night.”
SR88 in Douglas County to be closed over two weekend for culvert installation

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County road department will close State Route 88 for two upcoming weekends for placement of flood mitigation box culverts. Detour signs will be in place to guide drivers around the road closure.
The road will be closed at SR 88 County Road Roundabout and at the SR 88 Mottsville Lane signal from Friday April 16 at 6:00 p.m. until Monday April 19 at 6:00 a.m. and again on Friday April 23 at 6:00 p.m. until Monday April 26th at 6:00 a.m.
Man arrested after two suspicious fires in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of setting two fires in South Lake Tahoe early Thursday morning.
At just before 1:00 a.m. April 8, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the report of a wildland fire in the 1500 block of Al Tahoe Boulevard. SLTPD officers arrived on scene and were able to extinguish the fire. It was determined the fire had been intentionally set.

She received a landslide of nominations recognizing her for outstanding leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Motel shooting suspect released from hospital, booked into jail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The suspect who fired at police in an early morning standoff on March 19, 2021 has been released from Barton Hospital and is now in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe.
Joseph Hill, a 23-year-old man from Orangevale, Calif., is accused of shooting at officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) who had responded to the 3 Peaks Motel on Park Avenue on a report of a man trying to break into a room.
Remembering Mary Lou Mosbacher: Grandmother of the District

On March 27, 2021, South Lake Tahoe lost a devoted advocate for safe, clean drinking water and reliable wastewater services. Mary Lou Mosbacher (92), lovingly referred to as the Grandmother of the District, served on South Tahoe Public Utility District’s Board of Directors for 21 years (1990-2011).

Fourth suspect in Incline Village robbery and assault arrested

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. The fourth suspect wanted in connection with the Incline Village armed robbery and battery on March 21 has been arrested by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).
Deputies arrested Tristian Summers, 21, of Incline Village on April 4, 2021 at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport upon his return to northern Nevada from Mexico. He had been there on a vacation and that was his scheduled return according to Sarah Johns of WCSO.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sixty Easter baskets were recently given to children in the South Lake Tahoe community. Volunteers from the South Tahoe Association of
REALTORS® (STAR) distributed the baskets to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe and Live Violence Free.
These two agencies provided baskets to families that might otherwise not have been able to make this holiday special for their kids.

9:25AM Update: The early morning shooting in South Lake Tahoe has left one man dead and another in the hospital with critical injuries.
Investigators are still at the scene but here is what we know so far:
At 1:00 a.m., several calls were received by the 911 dispatchers about shots fired in the Sierra Boulevard area. Officers responded and found one man with numerous gunshot wounds. He was transported and later died.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe home had significant damage to its chimney structure after a Tuesday afternoon fire.
At 1:00 p.m. April 6, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a chimney fire at a home on Lost Sheep Lane. They were joined by Lake Valley Fire
Protection District, CalTahoe EMS Paramedics, and the South Lake Tahoe Police
Department.
The fire started in the chimney and was quickly contained, fortunately not spreading to other homes or vegetation in the area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As expected, or at least hoped, South Lake Tahoe and the rest of El Dorado County will make the move into the orange/moderate tier of the state's reopening plans on April 7. Sixteen counties will be moving to less restrictive tiers.
Gov. Gavin Newsom made the announcement Tuesday during a press conference from San Francisco.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new work development program is being created to inspire local youth to pursue career paths in natural resources, forestry, recreation, environment, and related fields. A partnership between the City of South Lake Tahoe's Parks and Recreation Department, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Lake Tahoe Community College and Sierra Nevada Alliance has been created to design and implement the work development program.

Windy start to a mild week in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a windy start to the week in South Lake Tahoe with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday. Expect winds from the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph and wave 2-3 feet.
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

When behind the wheel the road deserves your full attention. To remind Californians of the dangers of not doing so, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) are working together this for Distracted Driving Awareness Month this April.
The facts:
In 2019, 3,142 people were killed in motor crashes involving distracted drivers nationwide according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That is over eight people a day, on average.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In honor of Autism Awareness month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its newly wrapped vehicle with vinyl decals to increase awareness throughout the community surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder and bring attention to their Autism Recognition Alert Program.
For the second year, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped a patrol car with colored puzzle pieces as an inviting way for children and adults with autism to meet police officers in a casual setting.
Tahoe Paradise Park starts fundraising for new project

Tahoe Paradise Park has announced a permanent restroom project for the park. With 50 percent funding support from the per capita project of California State Parks, Tahoe Paradise Park is currently fundraising to build the matching funds required to complete the new project in 2022. The total cost of the project is $364,000.

Deadlines are nearing for turning in applications for scholarships being offered by the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Club. All awarded scholarships are a minimum of $1,000.
April 9 is the deadline for seniors at South Tahoe High School, Whittell High School and Mt. Tallc High School.
April 16 is the deadline for graduates of Lake Tahoe Community College and the Lake Tahoe Fire Academy.

April 16, 2021 (All day) Update: The South Tahoe High School Drama Department is extending the showing of Almost, Maine for a third weekend. Performance dates are added on April 16 and 17 at 7:00 p.m.

The South Tahoe High School Drama Department presents Almost, Maine a play by John Cariani comprising of nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine.
The play was filmed entirely on the South Tahoe High/Tahoe Arts and Design Academy (TADA) Theatre Stage during COVID-19 and it will be streamed to the public several days in April.

Two South Tahoe High seniors commit to playing college football

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With Friday's Senior Night on the field they've called home for the last four years, Jake Tarwater and Mason Hage know it won't be their last snap. Both players have committed to colleges to continue their school and football careers this fall.
Quarterback Tarwater is heading to Truman State, a Division II school in Missouri, while teammate Hage, a wide receiver, is heading to Ohio to the University of Mount Union, a Division III school.
Tarwater has been able to tour the Kirksville campus and meet his future Bulldogs teammates.
Barton expands partnership with UC Davis Children's Hospital to benefit new moms and babies

Barton Health is expanding its relationship with UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento to offer more specialized care to newborns in the Lake Tahoe region.
The arrangement increases Barton’s ability to care for more at-risk newborns by providing increased access to UC Davis specialists and experts including a neonatologist, and neonatal specialists within the pharmacy, respiratory therapy and nutrition departments. Barton team members will have access to education opportunities through UC Davis Health to ensure training and new skill acquisition.
