You Matter, I Will Listen
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/16/2017 - 5:43pmLife isn't always easy and sometimes people just need someone to talk to. Everyone can benefit from some sort of support and it can be as simple as a cup of tea with a friend, a walk around the block or a conversation.
The "You Matter, I Sill Listen" campaign was started last year by Sabrina Owen, manager of El Dorado County Mental Health programs in South Lake Tahoe, to help people be that needed a little support.
Let’s have an honest talk about suicide

Why does each mind matter? Mental health is something we all have. Just as our bodies need attention, our minds also need nourishment and care. Suicide rates are increasing and there is a relationship between mental illness and suicide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), about 90 percent of people who die by suicide have experienced mental health issues.
Youth in Juvenile Treatment Center earn CPR/AED cards
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/15/2017 - 1:12pmEleven youth detained at the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe recently received two certifications: American Heart Association Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
This was the first time the course was offered to the youth housed at the facility, and not only did they get these important certifications but they also earned school credits.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): The highway is reduced to one lane in each direction at Bridal Veil Falls for slope repair work.
U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Bull Creek Road to Alder Creek Road near White Hall: Motorists can expect intermittent one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to noon Friday for drainage work.
Suspected arrested for murder of El Dorado County man
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/10/2017 - 11:40pm5/12 Update: The victim in this homicide has been identified as 43-year-old David Franklin Meade, a resident of El Dorado. Meade and suspect Eriksen were known acquaintances and this was not a random incident.
The investigation lead El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies to a home located on Lindberg Avenue in Placerville where they suspected Eriksen was hiding. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was deployed to the residence to take Eriksen into custody. Officers closed surrounding streets after the suspect barricaded himself in the home.

This is a fun, hands-on restoration day where participants help improve the watershed habitats that surround Lake Tahoe since healthy forests act as natural pollution filters to 'Keep Tahoe Blue.'

Almost 1,500 lbs of trash collected during Clean Tahoe's “Spring Clean”event

On Saturday May 6th, 118 volunteers scoured South Tahoe neighborhoods to help clean it up and kick off the summer with a litter-free town. The groups covered fifteen different locations and gathered 1,484 pounds of trash and debris from our environment.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue looks to City Council for new boat
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/30/2017 - 11:27pmWithout a boat since 2015, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) will ask City Council for $75,000 on Tuesday for the purchase of a used SAFE boat.
The former fire rescue boat, Marine 17, was taken off the lake (decommissioned) in 2015 after 15 years of service. Needed repairs amounted to more than the value of the boat. Since the SLTFR has borrowed Marine 2 which belongs to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Teen arrested as suspect in murder of relative in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/30/2017 - 12:05amEl Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) deputies responding to a suspicious circumstances call Friday night found the body of a 41-year-old man inside a Diamond Springs residence just before 11:00 p.m.
The unidentified man was the victim of apparent gunshot.
Deputies found the victim's truck missing as well as a juvenile family member who was reportedly at the residence.
Detectives who had been called to the scene to investigate the crime located the victim’s truck being driven in the area near the residence. They found the juvenile relative inside the truck and was detained.
One dies in Pollock Pines house fire
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/28/2017 - 10:09pmFirefighters responding to a house fire on in Pollock Pines Friday morning found a body in the home as they were extinguishing the fire.
El Dorado County Fire responded to the 5:30 a.m. fire on North Street.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) responded to begin an investigation along with the El Dorado County fire investigators. At this point the decedent cannot be identified according to Sgt. Tasha Thompson of EDSO.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Tahoe Art League hosts exhibit in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month

Participants in El Dorado County Wellness Center programs will have a chance to show off their artistic skills in the “Each Mind Matters” art exhibit hosted by the Tahoe Art League from May 1 to May 5. The exhibit is in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month and will be kicked off with with an artist's reception and awards ceremony in the school's Commons on May 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Local man arrested on burglary charges after found inside Al Tahoe Post Office
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/25/2017 - 4:45pmA South Lake Tahoe man remains behind bars today after being arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of burglary.
On April 24 at 2:00 a.m., South Lake Tahoe Police officers responding to an alarm found 21-year-old Zachary L. Mulcahy wearing a stolen postal employee jacket inside the locked portion of the main post office. Mulcahy is accused of breaking into mailboxes while inside as he had allegedly had mail on his person that didn't belong to him.

Mosquito Awareness Week brings reminders on how protect against the insect

As warmer weather approaches residents should be aware of the serious risks mosquitoes present to their health, including West Nile, Saint Louis encephalitis, and potentially dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses.

Earth Day South Lake Tahoe style features a full day of education on ways to counteract global climate change through recycling and composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability, and reducing our ecological footprint. For over a decade, volunteers from the Tahoe Earth Day Foundation have put on the event for all ages.

A panel of six people spoke to the crowd of almost 100 people (and another 300 who were viewing online) during the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) fourth Town Hall meeting in South Lake Tahoe.

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.
Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

His dilemma is part of the complex immigration debate in California, where a bill passed last week by the state Senate would restrict cooperation with U.S. immigration agents everywhere, including not only liberal strongholds but bastions of conservatism like El Dorado County.
Body of missing Sacramento woman found in Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe

Divers found her before noon but did not have positive identification until about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Man arrested on arson charges after campfire gets out of hand
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/06/2017 - 11:53amA man attempting to warm his feet after a night spent in the forest is now in the El Dorado County Jail on charges of arson on forest Land.
South Lake Tahoe Fire and Police Departments responded to the 11:37 a.m. call on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 on Airport Road. There they found Matthew Raymond Hamilton, 41, who told them he started the illegal fire but it got out of hand and caught a tree on fire. Hamilton called 911.
When SLTFR arrived they extinguished the small fire which was about 3' x 3' and involved a tree stump.
Heavenly employee arrested on child exploitation and pornography charges
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/05/2017 - 6:18pmA 26-year-old male employee at the Heavenly Mountain Resort children’s ski school was officially charged Wednesday for child exploitation and possession of child pornography after images were found on an electronic device at the resort.
Stephan L. DeGraffenreid of Gardnerville was charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a child, two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child, and one count of possession of child pornography.
Bear Boxes available for Lake Tahoe customers of South Tahoe Refuse

Customers can purchase a box up to a value of $1,300 from approved vendors and repay the cost through a $65 increase in their quarterly refuse bill.

Injured backcountry skier rescued from Lake Tahoe's Jake's Peak
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/31/2017 - 3:52pmSearch and Rescue volunteers were dropped off on Jake's Peak Thursday to help an injured backcountry skier get off the mountain which is located inside Desolation Wilderness at Lake Tahoe.
At 2:30 p.m. on March 30, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a call about the injured skier, a 24-year-old man from San Luis Obispo who was in the area on Spring Break. He had been skiing near Jake's Peak when he suffered a lower leg injury and couldn't get out on his own.
McCallum releases resignation letter as community leaders bid her farewell

Novasel holding South Lake Tahoe/Meyers meeting to discuss traffic

During their meeting on March 21, approval was given for the concept of an ordinance that, once created, will be back before the Supervisors in April for final adoption.

Planning Commissioner resigns after possible conflict identified
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/23/2017 - 5:07pmA letter sent to the South Lake Tahoe City Council and Lake Tahoe Unified School District has prompted Angela Swanson, a member of the City's Planning Commission, to resign from her position.
Swanson was appointed to the commission after submitting an application and being appointed during the January 17, 2017 City Council meeting. She was one of 11 people vying for the five open positions, each for a two-year term.
Lake Valley Fire crews respond to Meyers roof collapse
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/22/2017 - 12:19pmLake Valley Fire Department (LVFD) crews responded to a roof collapse off of Nahane Street Wednesday morning. The flat roof and deck collapsed over the garage of the Meyers area home had due to a heavy snow load.
A neighbor saw the damage March 22 and called it in, but they are unsure of when the incident actually occurred.
Crews immediately shut off the gas to the property and notified Liberty Utilities, Southwest Gas, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and Building Department.
Judi McCallum leaves her El Dorado County post to pursue passions

"I have had such a great run as a Supervisor's Assistant at the County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors doing exactly what I love most, helping people," McCallum told South Tahoe Now during her first hour of retirement.
Since 1991 she has worked for four District V Supervisors, with 18 elected Supervisors down the hallway, more than 10 Chief Administrators or Interims, and 1,600 "amazing" county employees.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after alleged DUI hit-and-run
