Medicare open enrollment virtual workshop set

EDCF hosts first nonprofit speed matching event in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was laughter, good conversation, and a strong sense of community at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe last week. Fifty South Shore community members got together during the first "speed matching" day on September 28, half representing local nonprofits, and the other half were community members interested in joining the nonprofits as possible board members.

El Dorado Community Foundation (EDCF) sponsored the inaugural event.

Prescribed fire operations could return next week

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) fall prescribed fire program may begin as early as Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022. Conditions and weather permitting, California State Parks is scheduled to conduct understory burning on approximately 21 acres in Sugar Pine Point State Park on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore. Smoke will be present. A map with project details is available for viewing on the Tahoe Living With Fire website.

Site work underway on South Lake Tahoe's Sugar Pine Village affordable housing project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Trees are being cleared at the site of the Sugar Pine Village affordable housing project in South Lake Tahoe as crews begin Phase 1 of the long-awaited launch. With the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) grading season ending October 15, the contractor will finish up the demolition of trees, remove tree stumps, clear and grub, then winterize the site.

Final site work, underground utilities, and vertical construction will resume in the spring.

South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates forum at LTCC

A South Lake Tahoe City Council Candidates Forum will be held at Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room on Tuesday, October 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This will be a "candidate speed dating" format, which puts the public at a table with two of the candidates at a time. The public will have approx 10 minutes to ask questions and get to know the candidates before they switch tables, and another two candidates visit.

This continues until all candidates have gone to all tables.

If there is time left there will be an open question session for everyone.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park to close this week for fall Gondola maintenance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe will be closed October 5 -7 to allow for maintenance work by Heavenly Mountain Resort. As 2022 summer operations come to a close, Heavenly is shifting its focus toward ski and ride season. That includes preparing the Gondola for additional work as guests from around the world plan to visit this upcoming winter to take in the beauty of Lake Tahoe and recreate in the High Sierra.

Over 1,400 personnel remain assigned to the Mosquito Fire as they work towards full fire suppression, suppression repair and strengthening, contingency firelines and hazard tree abatement.

The Mosquito fire is 76,788 acres in size and there is a containment line around 90 percent of the fire.

Douglas County School Board candidates scheduled to debate

With the election just over a month away, there are opportunities to listen to the candidates for multiple offices in the area. One race has become contentious, that for three Douglas County School Board trustee positions, one for each area 2, 5, and 6.

A group from Douglas County, the non-partisan Good Governance Group, is hosting a debate with the six candidates on October 6 at 5 p.m. at the Douglas County Community Center.

Small fire near Sierra-at-Tahoe possibly smoldering since Caldor Fire

Crews responded to a fire within the Caldor Fire burn area on Thursday afternoon.

At 4:15 p.m. on September 29, the USFS and CalFire fire crews responded to an area near Sierra-at-Tahoe known as Huckleberry Flat. Lake Valley Fire responded and staged in the area. The person calling in the fire had seen a stream of smoke and alerted authorities.

The fire was found about 3,000 feet inside the Caldor perimeter.

Douglas County to host joint Commission/VHR Advisory Board meeting in Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County dog agility trainer charged with sexually exploiting a child overseas

A federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Terry Francis Le Clair, 64, of Shingle Springs, charging him with sexual exploitation of a child, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Invasive species watercraft inspection stations to change operations starting Oct. 1

The seasons are changing! Beginning October 1, watercraft inspection stations will change locations and shift to a first-come, first-served basis. The appointment system will reopen in 2023.

• AIS inspections and decontaminations will continue to be available at the Meyers, Calif. station Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Barton wellness program helps reduce risk of major illness through MIND Diet

“This budget continues the Board’s fiscally conservative approach by balancing the needs to be prepared for a recession, while also investing in much-needed compensation increases and security enhancements for our

Green sentenced 15 years to life in 37 year old murder case

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Judge Suzanne Kingsbury has presided over many murder trials during her career, but she said the murder of Jane Hylton stands out as the single most brutal murder she's ever come across.

Hylton was murdered on July 7, 1985, in El Dorado Hills. Hylton's body was found by her 13-year-old daughter Autumn, their roommate Ricky Davis and his girlfriend Connie Dahle. She had multiple wounds including 29 piercing wounds on her body and neck, including pierced lungs. Hylton was beaten on the face, was bit on the shoulder, and still had the tip of a knife in her head.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Blue Angels return to the sky over Northern Nevada once again during the Minden-Tahoe Airport’s Aviation Roundup taking place on Oct. 1 and 2.

Six of the US Navy F-18 Super Blue Hornets who make up the Blue Angels have been seen practicing in the area.

The aviation roundup is a premier airshow produced by Douglas County and hosted at the Minden-Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada. The airshow is a bi-annual event and features excellent airshow performers and military jet demonstration teams.

South Lake Tahoe man dies from "negligent discharge of a 9mm handgun," roommate arrested on gun charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has released information about Friday night's shooting at a residence in the 700 block of James Avenue.

On September 23 at approximately 6:06 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Dispatch received a 911 call about a single gunshot inside a residence and a possible victim of a gunshot wound. SLTPD patrol officers responded and found a 37-year-old man inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Volunteers rally for 25th year of Tahoe ecosystem restoration event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – For the 25th consecutive year, volunteers laced up their boots, pulled on their gloves, and went to work healing Tahoe’s beautiful but sensitive environment for Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days – the region’s longest-running ecosystem restoration event. Forest health partners deploy new technology to help reduce wildfire threats in Lake Tahoe region

TRUCKEE, Calif. — With the Mosquito Fire and Tamarack Fire burning close to Lake Tahoe, and the Caldor Fire entering the Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Fund and Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation announced the deployment of Land Tender™. This is a powerful new software tool developed by Vibrant Planet, that will allow land managers to collaboratively address wildfire threats and plan forest health and restoration treatments. Land Tender will be used in the Tahoe Basin and surrounding critical watersheds covering 1.5 million acres, making this the largest deployment to date of this new system.
