SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hot temperatures continue Sunday with a few degrees of cooling by Monday. This week won't have the record-breaking heat experienced in South Lake Tahoe this past week. Breezy winds are expected the first half of this
coming week, with temperatures cooling to near normal by midweek, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Another heatwave with chances for thunderstorms is possible going into next weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. There may be some missing calls due to sheriff's logs not being completed at the time of the story.

I met my Lil' Mama at Frank’s Restaurant and knew she was out of my league. I ate breakfast and lunch there every day just to check her out. I was working construction and a friend of mine, Del Lafountain, begged her to go out with me so he could go to another place to eat.

The first date was great. On the second date we got in a car wreck and she went to the Truckee Hospital and I went home. Jimmy Newton, my future best man, and I went to pick her up, and as I looked at her lying there all busted up, I turned to him and said, “I am going to marry this one.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While Sunday, June 20 is the first day of astronomical summer, most in the Lake Tahoe Basin and around the west will say the heat of summer is already here! The forecast has a high of 90 for much of the Lake Tahoe Basin on Saturday and if that comes to be, it will be a tie of the high temperature for the date. The record high for June 20 is 88, which also happens to be Sunday's forecast.

Here is a glimpse of the temps this week:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a workshop on proposed changes to the South Lake Tahoe Cannabis Ordinance on Tuesday, June 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The City Council Cannabis Subcommittee (Mayor Pro Tem Devin Middlebrook and Councilmember John Friedrich) is hosting this workshop to present proposed changes to the City’s cannabis ordinance and receive feedback from community members.

The Reno Jazz Orchestra’s (RJO) 17-piece big band will heat up the summer as they perform “Now, Then and Forever – Celebrating Earth, Wind & Fire,” in Reno and Lake Tahoe, NV. Accompanying the RJO are vocalists Lori Johnson, David Wells, Kira McGlothen, Caitlin Collins Martin, and Kandeh Jones who together will present the captivating sounds of soul, funk, jazz, and chart-topping hits such as Shining Star, In the Stone, After the Love Has Gone, September, and many other favorite songs.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The American Legion Post 795 held its annual flag retirement ceremony at the Legion in South Lake Tahoe on June 14. They were joined by the Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Boy Scout Troup #594.

Over 60 flags were burned, the only official way to retire a flag. During the past several weeks, DAR led collection efforts in getting flags to the Legion for the ceremony. Members then appropriately cut the flags up to be burned.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was also on hand as a safety measure.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a joke that there are two seasons in the Sierra - winter and road construction. Knowing people can be inconvenienced by roadwork, the City of South Lake Tahoe Public Works Department created an interactive map that shows local projects within the city limits.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (TWC), the local non-profit tasked with taking care of Lake Tahoe's injured, sick, and orphaned animals, has received a donation from the staff at Stateline's Lucky Beaver Bar and Grill.

Knowing the group is important to the area, the staff knew they wanted to make a difference and pulled together to personally donate over $20,000 to TWC over the last month.

The Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities (Tahoe Network) with support from the Tahoe Fund is hosting a free virtual screening of the documentary "Not If, But When: Wildfire Solutions" through Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema from June 13 - June 24, 2021.

The film is based on interviews with leading experts and highlights cutting-edge wildfire practices that use the latest data

Five Tahoe area Raley’s stores are currently offering savings on tickets to the American Century Championship, the celebrity golf tournament featuring nearly 90 sports and entertainment stars at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, July 7-11.

Daily tickets are available Friday through Sunday for $27 each, a $3 savings off the regular price; or $23 each when purchasing $50 or more in groceries, a $7 or 23 percent savings, with a limit of four tickets per day per person.

As temperatures rise, a landscape that continues to dry, and a lake level that is dropping daily, conditions are unfortunately becoming ripe for fire. In order to better protect the Lake Tahoe Basin, restrictions on open flames have expanded to more areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lovin’ Lake Tahoe and Lift Literature have joined forces to help kids in Tahoe gain a sense of wonder, awe, and imagination every time they pick up a book. The pandemic was extremely difficult on students and set many of them back when it comes to reading. This school year posed so many challenges to students and many are facing more disadvantages than ever.

Lift Literature believes that it’s time to create a movement to transform how kids on the South Shore engage in reading.

El Dorado County officials today announced the unexpected passing of County
Surveyor, Philip Mosbacher.

“It is with the heaviest heart that I impart the news that our County’s Surveyor and friend, Phil Mosbacher, passed away unexpectedly at his home last Thursday,” said Board of Supervisor Chairman, John Hidahl. “Phil was a tireless public servant with deep roots in the community going back generations, who always approached whatever he did with a positive attitude. He will be deeply missed by all the people fortunate enough to call him a coworker and friend.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over 20 years the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) has given books to students at schools in Zephyr Cove and the Lake Tahoe Unified Schoo District (LTUSD), and 2021 is no different.

Co-chairs of the program, Cookie Rork and Laurie Brazil, ordered 2,700 books in Spanish and English to distribute to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The books are for the children to keep and either start or add to their own personal collection.

The South Shore community is invited to discuss the Lake Tahoe region's tourism recovery in a Virtual Town Hall led by Dr. Gregory A. Miller, Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) Executive Director. Sponsored by the Tahoe Chamber, the Town Hall will be held on Friday, June 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Zoom.

CREST and its partners collected information on COVID-19 impacts from the tourism sector. This research provided background and insight towards developing a framework for responsible recovery and the thirteen guidelines in rebalancing the tourism model.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This Friday, June 18, will be Gale Lawrence's last day of driving a big yellow school bus through the streets of South Lake Tahoe. For 35 years (33 as a full-time driver, 2 as a substitute), Gale has safely delivered students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) between home and school.

She knows it will be an emotional day on her last day. Each year, when the school year comes to a close, she sheds tears as she becomes attached to the kids are her bus. Even as we spoke of her pending retirement, she was getting choked up.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This time of year normally signals an increase in bicycle thefts throughout the South Shore, and 2021 is no different. The increase usually comes as more bikes are left in public and outside their homes, both secured and unsecured.

"This increase in visibility creates a crime of opportunity," said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Travis Cabral.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The doors will be officially opening to Flatstick Pub in South Lake Tahoe on June 17, 2021. Flatstick Pub is a new concept for the area - a community-focused craft brewpub and restaurant with a challenging mini-golf and a variety of other interactive games. They are located at 4101 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in the Zalanta Resort across from Heavenly Village and are open Sunday-Thursday 11:00 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Our last leg of our trifecta and our first in-person live event has ended with many decked out in Star War’s garb. This was a FUN opportunity for us to celebrate those in recovery due to substance abuse or mental health challenges while being active during this very challenging and difficult year! It is with much appreciation I want to thank all our participants who participated in this month’s Moving for Recovery Event and for those who attended all three of our Recovery events either virtually or in person. The Tahoe region knows firsthand the consequences of natural disasters. From the Angora Fire in 2007 to the ever-increasing threat of wildfires each year, these consequences are far-reaching. As our region heads into fire season, the dialogues about climate change and natural disasters ripple throughout the community.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be breezy winds through Tuesday in the Lake Tahoe Basin with the strongest and most widespread winds on Monday when there is a Lake Wind Advisory in place from noon to 9:00 p.m. This will result in periods of choppy lake waters and elevated fire weather concerns with southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Temperatures will be above normal through the early part of the week before warming to record levels later in the week. A few thunderstorms may develop on the hottest days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
