LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Prosperity Center will conduct volunteer community walks next week to visit businesses around Lake Tahoe to gauge the region’s business and community needs. These walks will include volunteers walking into businesses to ask ten questions and will take place between Oct. 15 – Oct. 17 in person throughout the entire Tahoe Basin. All results from the surveys will be available to the public.

As a longtime resident of South Lake Tahoe, I find it very concerning that former city manager David Jinkens is running for City Council.
During this campaign, David Jinkens has continually touted his experience as a city manager. He has stated that his experience is one of the reasons the voters should elect him. However, he rarely shares any tangible accomplishments during this time. And our local media seems to have failed to ask about this same experience. Let’s take a closer look at the experience David Jinkens thinks deserves your vote.

When considering your vote on Measure U, please remember how we benefit from Proposition 13. What does the 1978 California property tax limitation law have to do with our local school facility bond measure? Prop 13 keeps our taxes lower by limiting residential property tax assessment to one percent of the actual purchase price and then keeping annual tax increases at two percent per year after that. Our local property taxes on average are much lower than other states around the country.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will be masticating around the Golden Bear neighborhood this week beginning Oct. 8, 2024.
Boil water notice issued for Heavenly area of South Lake Tahoe

7PM Update: A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for residents on the Heavenly mountainside of Pioneer Trail between Ski Run Blvd and Fern Road. The boil water advisory is issued out of an abundance of caution and is expected to be resolved within 48 hours.
Impacted households should only use tap water that has been boiled vigorously for one minute or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution to avoid stomach or intestinal illness. Tap water may still be used for bathing, hand washing, and laundry.

Dear Residents, Please Vote Yes on Measure U! Measure U is a Lake Tahoe School District Bond earmarked for facilities at our schools.
You may be as “uninformed” as I was a week ago about U. A similar bond was on our ballot two years ago, but it did not pass with the 55 percent required, by very few votes. Our school facilities are crumbling, and many of the classrooms are in temporary buildings and have been for 20 years.

Douglas County Citizens, It has become increasingly obvious that Trustee Doug Englekirk is no longer a person we can trust to carry out the business of the Douglas County School District (DCSD.) Not because of his beliefs or ideas on what he thinks is best for our kids, but because by his own admission at recent debates and legal proceedings, he simply doesn’t have the time that is required of a trustee to perform the business of the DCSD.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High-pressure buckles and breaks down over the next couple of days as weak shortwaves sweep through the Sierra and western Nevada. For the most part, warm and dry conditions prevail, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
There is high confidence for winds to ramp up for the end of the week with wind gusts in the 25-35 mph range. While cooling temperatures will allow for higher daytime humidity values, keep an eye on the end of the week for possible fire weather concerns.
El Dorado County elections office moves, improving public access

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - As the 133,171 registered voters in El Dorado County prepare to cast a ballot for the November 5 election, work is being done behind the scenes to ensure a quick and transparent process.
This year, the county's elections office changed locations, from the County Government Center in Placerville to a County building in Shingle Springs at 3883 Ponderosa Road. The new location is newer, with large windows, and plenty of space for processing ballots, and it provides an easy way for the public to watch the tabulation of ballots.

Nonna K. Katzenstein (nee Klinghardt) was born in Harbin, China, on January 30, 1926. She died on September 13, 2024, in South Lake Tahoe at the age of 98.
Nonna was born in Harbin, China after her parents had emigrated from Siberia to China after the Russian Revolution. Education was important to her family and at the age of nine, she attended St. Francis boarding school in Cheefoo, China for seven years. There she learned English since Russian was her native language. When WW II broke out in 1941, her school closed and she returned to Shanghai to live with her family.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Congressman Kevin Kiley was on the South Shore this week for a few events and spent time with South Lake Tahoe business owners to hear about their situations and concerns.
He visited with the owners of Alpine Carpets and Borges Chiropractic before a stop at Cuppa Tahoe where he chatted with owner Sandra Santane.
Santane said small businesses are the backbone of a community, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep a thriving business with rising costs of supplies and insurance.

First, we must thank our County Supervisor, Brooke Laine, for her enduring tenacity every year in ensuring we have golf carts and security for our parade. Jeanette Riva, thank you for reaching out to the community and getting our convertible cars for our royalty and for our admin to ride in for our parade. Without these two women, we would be overwhelmed and South Tahoe High School (STHS) would be unable to have such a successful parade. Thank you both so much.

In an unprecedented move during the 2022 election, the Douglas County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC) endorsed three candidates (Burns, Jansen & Dickerson) for the Douglas County School Board, which are non-partisan positions.
The DCRCC support was predicated on the national agenda of liberal ideology in education (i.e. wokeism, indoctrination, etc.) which has never existed in the Douglas County School system.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saturday, October 5 is the 3rd annual Witch Paddle off the shore of South Lake Tahoe at the Beach Retreat & Lodge. Last year, 400 "witches" participated in the event on over 150 boards and kayaks, and organizers hope to make it bigger this year.

South Tahoe High School construction trades students build dog houses for community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each year, South Tahoe High School (STHS) students in the construction trades program put their skills to the test by building sturdy dog houses for the community. Under the guidance of Morgan Amsden, students learn essential construction techniques, including framing, siding, trim work, and roofing.
Once completed, these high-quality dog houses are offered free of charge to interested community members. This initiative not only provides valuable hands-on experience for the students but also supports local pet owners.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is off to a fairly smooth start, and teachers say the updated cell phone policy has been a game changer, even after just a few weeks. LTUSD Assistant to the Superintendent Teresa Schow said the school sites say the policies are working "really well, resulting in reduced distractions and an increase in student learning."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - We reached out to all of the candidates for the two open positions on the South Lake Tahoe city council, asking for them to respond to some questions. Sadly, not all responded, but the public will get to hear from a few of them in the order their replies were received, one candidate a day Tuesday-Friday.
Harrah's/Harveys Lake Tahoe customers donate almost $10,000 to TASK

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - When gamblers at Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe cash in their vouchers from slot machines they have the option to donate the change portion to Caesars Makes Change. Those who say "yes" to donate have the choice as to which local nonprofit they'd like to have their funds go to support.
In a check presentation Thursday, Daniela Sulier of Caesars Entertainment presented a check for $9,508.95 to the Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK), one of those possible nonprofits selected by customers.
South Lake Tahoe Police looking for suspect in armed robbery of 7-11 midtown

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, an armed suspect entered the 7-11 store located at 2620 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. The man brandished a handgun and demanded money from the cashier.
The cashier was not injured during the event. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating the case and is not releasing information about any cash that may have been stolen.
Tahoe Improv Players host ComedySportz San Jose in a match of "witz"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saturday, October 19, will be a nostalgic day of improv at the Boathouse Theater honoring Gerry Orton, who is retiring after 31 years as director of Tahoe Improv Players, the lake’s longest-running comedy show.
Orton’s last show features Tahoe Improv Players hosting ComedySportz San Jose in A Match of Witz. Two teams of players will compete for points and laughs with the audience giving suggestions that become hilarious fully improvised scenes. The audience decides the winner of each round and ultimately the match.
