EDCF hosts first nonprofit speed matching event in South Lake Tahoe

Fifty South Shore community members got together during the first "speed matching" day on September 28, half representing local nonprofits, and the other half were community members interested in joining the nonprofits as possible board members.
El Dorado Community Foundation (EDCF) sponsored the inaugural event.
Prescribed fire operations could return next week

Conditions and weather permitting, California State Parks is scheduled to conduct understory burning on approximately 21 acres in Sugar Pine Point State Park on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore. Smoke will be present. A map with project details is available for viewing on the Tahoe Living With Fire website.
Site work underway on South Lake Tahoe's Sugar Pine Village affordable housing project
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/01/2022 - 11:31pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Trees are being cleared at the site of the Sugar Pine Village affordable housing project in South Lake Tahoe as crews begin Phase 1 of the long-awaited launch. With the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) grading season ending October 15, the contractor will finish up the demolition of trees, remove tree stumps, clear and grub, then winterize the site.
Final site work, underground utilities, and vertical construction will resume in the spring.

A South Lake Tahoe City Council Candidates Forum will be held at Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room on Tuesday, October 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
This will be a "candidate speed dating" format, which puts the public at a table with two of the candidates at a time. The public will have approx 10 minutes to ask questions and get to know the candidates before they switch tables, and another two candidates visit.
This continues until all candidates have gone to all tables.
If there is time left there will be an open question session for everyone.

I care deeply about our community and look to what can be done in the next term that really affects our residents. It is why I ran for office in the primary. I now look to the effectiveness of who will be our next Supervisor.
The office of Supervisor is an important executive role and oversees most county departments and programs; annually approves their budgets; supervises the official conduct of county officers and employees; controls all county property; and appropriates and spends money on programs that meet our needs.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park to close this week for fall Gondola maintenance

As 2022 summer operations come to a close, Heavenly is shifting its focus toward ski and ride season. That includes preparing the Gondola for additional work as guests from around the world plan to visit this upcoming winter to take in the beauty of Lake Tahoe and recreate in the High Sierra.
Mosquito Fire: 76,788 acres and 90% containment

The Mosquito fire is 76,788 acres in size and there is a containment line around 90 percent of the fire.

Douglas County School Board candidates scheduled to debate

A group from Douglas County, the non-partisan Good Governance Group, is hosting a debate with the six candidates on October 6 at 5 p.m. at the Douglas County Community Center.
Small fire near Sierra-at-Tahoe possibly smoldering since Caldor Fire

At 4:15 p.m. on September 29, the USFS and CalFire fire crews responded to an area near Sierra-at-Tahoe known as Huckleberry Flat. Lake Valley Fire responded and staged in the area. The person calling in the fire had seen a stream of smoke and alerted authorities.
The fire was found about 3,000 feet inside the Caldor perimeter.

First, she joined TAP as the assistant director in 1992 before becoming its executive director. Her dedication to achieving TAP’s mission goes above and beyond. This has allowed the organization to thrive and grow. Peggy clearly loves what she does, and it shows through the joy she brings to the kids and all the joy that they bring to her.

Green sentenced 15 years to life in 37 year old murder case
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/27/2022 - 9:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Judge Suzanne Kingsbury has presided over many murder trials during her career, but she said the murder of Jane Hylton stands out as the single most brutal murder she's ever come across.
Hylton was murdered on July 7, 1985, in El Dorado Hills. Hylton's body was found by her 13-year-old daughter Autumn, their roommate Ricky Davis and his girlfriend Connie Dahle. She had multiple wounds including 29 piercing wounds on her body and neck, including pierced lungs. Hylton was beaten on the face, was bit on the shoulder, and still had the tip of a knife in her head.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless announces Project Homekey success and transition in leadership

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Blue Angels return to the sky over Northern Nevada once again during the Minden-Tahoe Airport’s Aviation Roundup taking place on Oct. 1 and 2.
Six of the US Navy F-18 Super Blue Hornets who make up the Blue Angels have been seen practicing in the area.
The aviation roundup is a premier airshow produced by Douglas County and hosted at the Minden-Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada. The airshow is a bi-annual event and features excellent airshow performers and military jet demonstration teams.
South Lake Tahoe man dies from "negligent discharge of a 9mm handgun," roommate arrested on gun charges

On September 23 at approximately 6:06 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Dispatch received a 911 call about a single gunshot inside a residence and a possible victim of a gunshot wound. SLTPD patrol officers responded and found a 37-year-old man inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the head.
Volunteers rally for 25th year of Tahoe ecosystem restoration event

This is a powerful new software tool developed by Vibrant Planet, that will allow land managers to collaboratively address wildfire threats and plan forest health and restoration treatments. Land Tender will be used in the Tahoe Basin and surrounding critical watersheds covering 1.5 million acres, making this the largest deployment to date of this new system.

Some adoptions are free this week at Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/25/2022 - 8:29pmThrough October 1, all adoption fees at the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) are waived for pets over four months old! Normally, the fee for dogs 5 months and older is $110, and for under four months is $160. Save a life, save a lot!
All pets adopted at HSTT are already spayed or neutered which normally runs $700 for the surgery, more for larger dogs. Also, every pet adopted from them includes an initial medical check, current vaccinations, and a microchip, a savings of $300-$400.
Kudos: Vail Resorts supports Bread & Broth
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/25/2022 - 8:04pmVail’s Epic Promise grant monies have been funding Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorships since 2011, the year that the Adopt A Day program was first implemented. Since the Epic Promise Grant funds cover the cost of 12 Adopt A Days yearly, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort crew members alternate monthly meal sponsorships. Starting with their initial participation, all of the AAD crews from the two Vail Resorts have been a delight to have helping with the weekly Monday Meals served at St. Theresa Church’s Grace Hall.
Mosquito Fire now 85% contained, 76,781 acres in size

In the late afternoon, as some of the large-diameter trees began to smoke again after last week’s rain event, aircraft were deployed, providing support ahead of ground crews.
Mild week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

Temperatures will top out at 5 to 10 degrees above average, with continued light winds and mostly dry conditions. Breezy afternoon winds are likely Tuesday and Wednesday. A ridge will then build in and stay overhead through next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
