Quick Veteran's Day storm at Lake Tahoe - Lake and winter weather advisories
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/10/2024 - 7:51pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a quick-moving storm forecast for Lake Tahoe on Monday, Veteran's Day. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued both a Winter Weather Advisory and a Lake Wind Advisory.
The Lake Wind Advisory is for 10 p.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph and waves 2 to 4 feet for Lake Tahoe.
Liberty implements Public Safety Power Shutoff for some Alpine County residents
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/10/2024 - 5:18pmMONDAY Update: Liberty is implementing a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) for Markleeville, Woodfords, and Desolation Hotel (Hope Valley) customers due to extreme fire conditions. Customers need to plan for an extended power shutoff that will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, November 11, and could last more than 24 hours.
If they are unable to secure necessary alternative power, customers are encouraged to visit the Liberty Community Resource Center from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Woodfords Community Center, 96 Washoe Blvd.
Smoke fills Lake Tahoe Basin from prescribed fires again
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/09/2024 - 4:16pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from prescribed fire operations in the Sierra Nevada and areas west has found its way into the Lake Tahoe Basin. While none of the fires are currently active, there was residual smoke that got trapped in an inversion layer.
The prescribed fires in the Lake Tahoe Basin were ignited through Friday south of Luther Pass Campground, on Columbine Trail, and Uppaway Estates, Glenbrook.
The National Weather Service in Reno said the winds that will be accompanying the incoming weather system on Sunday should move smoke out of the Lake Tahoe area.
South Lake Tahoe sales tax collection up in second quarter

Tax received on sales in the city was up for this quarter by 4.4 percent while El Dorado County and the State of California were both down in this same period.
South Lake Tahoe’s gross receipts from April through June were 4.2 percent above the second sales period in 2023. After adjusting for reporting modifications such as audit corrections and delayed payments, actual sales were up 4.4 percent. Sales tax results varied across tax groups.
Jinkens, Roberts win seats on South Lake Tahoe City Council, Measure U passes and Measure N fails

Measure U is passing 60.58% to 39.42% (55% was needed to pass), and Measure N is failing, 28.36% voting yes and a resounding no count of 71.64%.
Suspect dies, deputy injured after Douglas County shooting

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe to be first Lake Tahoe resort to open for 2024/25 season

South Tahoe High Cross Country teams run well at NIAA 3A state tournament

On the boys' side, Jacob Manning took his third-place finish in the 3A Northern Regionals and headed down south. Manning ran a 16:54.5, giving him fifth place at State in a field of 69 runners.
South Tahoe High earned a fifth-place finish at State with seven runners.
Other South Tahoe High finishers: Shamus Nealis (13th), Cooper Munson (38th), Luke Amato (44th), Austin Reichel (48th), Elijah Harper (50th), and Jones Mason (60th).
Sitting El Dorado County Supervisor John Hidahl passes away at 73

"My heart is broken," said District 5 Supervisor Brooke Laine. "It was my honor to know and serve with John Hidahl. He was extremely thoughtful and dignified. I extend my love to his wife, Eileen, and the family. It is a great loss."
El Dorado County released a statement Sunday morning.
Continued delays between Kings Beach and Tahoe City for broadband project

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed internet into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.
Utility work and striping operations with one-way traffic control are scheduled along SR-28 at the following locations and times:

Expect it to be breezy with east to northeast winds on and off through Wednesday with below-normal temperatures.
We are getting into that time of year for inversions, with the current pattern being favorable Monday and Thursday-Saturday for warming temperatures aloft. Air stagnation with haze and pollutant buildups are likely in the valleys and urban areas, without Lake Tahoe being affected.

Van Sickle BI-State Park and Tahoe Pines close to cars for the season

The Conservancy and Nevada State Parks co-manage the 725-acre Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The park provides day-use opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. For visitor safety, sledding is not allowed.
Fall means feeding frenzy for black bears

Now is the time to secure food, garbage, and recycling - all this is needed to keep Tahoe bears wild!
In the fall, an adult bear can consume 20,000 to 24,000 calories a day and can gain multiple pounds per day.
Golden mussels found in North America for first time, Lake Tahoe on high alert

Lake Tahoe is now on high alert, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). It is the first time the species has been detected in North America.
Charcoal use ban lifted in South Lake Tahoe; Burn permits now available for other areas

Residents may continue to use propane, pellets, liquid petroleum, and now charcoal, for outside cooking.
There is never any open flame burning with wood allowed in the City limits of South Lake Tahoe at any time of the year, except in the designated fire rings at Campground by the Lake.
Winter Weather Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe Friday - Saturday

NWS Reno said to expect snow accumulations up to 4 inches below 7000 feet with an inch or so at Lake Level, and 4 and 8 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph over Sierra ridges.
IMPACTS - Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

This new majority, composed of Trustees Susan Jansen, David Burns, Kathleen Dickerson, and incumbent Doug Englekirk is staunchly and vocally alt-right. They began planning their takeover long before the first day at the dais, as shown by text messages located during a contentious public records request.
Prescribed fire on SR4 at Calaveras Big Trees sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin

There is a prescribed fire on SR4 at Calaveras Big Trees and the plume of smoke gets elevated at that point, and the incoming weather system is bringing it right to South Lake Tahoe.
The National Weather Service in Reno could see it on their models, and there is no other source of smoke closer than Calaveras.

Over the past few days, SLTPD has received complaints regarding phone calls from people pretending to be members of their department. The scammer tells the victim they have a warrant for their arrest due to failing to appear in court. The scammers demand immediate payment for the victim to avoid legal repercussions.
Washoe Tribe a partner in latest of several new murals around South Lake Tahoe

The latest was created by Aspen Carrillo is a Washoe Basket and a tribute to the life of Washoe at Lake Tahoe, the center of their life. Members of the Washoe Tribe, including Chairman Smokey, were at the mural last week for a celebration of the completed work.
Chilly week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

Another system moves in Friday with chances for more rain and snow through Saturday.
If driving through the Sierra this week, expect slick roads, especially over the passes.
At this time, next week looks to be clear with slightly warmer highs.

Homeowners with "No on Measure N" signs feel threatened by recent acts of vandalism

A recent incident in the Al Tahoe neighborhood has drawn concern from homeowners who had a "No on N" sign in their front yards.
One of those, who we're naming "Susie Smith" so her identity is protected, said two people recently came to her home at night and defaced her sign and taped a letter over both sides of it. She said the letter was attempting to intimidate her from voting this election.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/26/2024 - 10:44pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area for Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The advisory is for South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Glenbrook, Incline Village, Stateline, Markleeville, and Tahoe City.
Expect southwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves could be 2 to 4 feet. Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

The Lakeside Park Association is a small area of South Lake Tahoe, located just behind the casinos along US50. This historic area is bordered by Park Avenue and Stateline Boulevard from the highway down to Lake Tahoe. This area was subdivided in 1909 into home-size lots used as campgrounds and kept the name Lakeside Park as the first subdivision in El Dorado County.
Sidestreet Boutique reopens after March 2023 roof collapse
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/24/2024 - 12:28pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The worst part of the March 5, 2023 roof collapse at Sidestreet Boutique for owner Barbara Parina may not have been the loss of about $1.9M in inventory, it's been not seeing her customers who have become good friends over her 52 years in business.
"Come see us, we miss all of our friends," said Barbara after reopening the boutique inside the Village Center in South Lake Tahoe.
Clean Up the Lake heads to Marlette Lake for backcountry cleanup

TRPA taps South Tahoe High alumnus as its next general counsel
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/24/2024 - 10:34amLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board has voted unanimously to offer the position of General Counsel to attorney Graham St. Michel. He will oversee compliance cases, violation settlements, and other legal issues for the bi-state agency. He will fill the position held by the retiring John L. Marshall, who has served as TRPA counsel for 25 years.
Helicopter crashes into river in Alpine County, pilot has minor injuries
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/23/2024 - 8:56pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - A day of fishing on the East Carson River in Alpine County didn't end up as planned for one man. On Tuesday, October 24, the Alpine County Sheriff's Office received a report of an overdue fisherman who had flown his privately owned helicopter to go fishing.
Alpine County Sheriff Tom Minder and deputies responded to the area of the East Carson River to locate the fisherman. While en route, deputies were notified the fisherman had called 911 to report his helicopter crashed and was currently in the river.
