Lake Wind Advisory in effect for two days at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/16/2022 - 8:36amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from Thursday, June 16 at 11 a.m. until Friday, June 17 at 9 p.m.
Southwest winds are forecast at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected. Waves on Lake Tahoe will average 2 to 4 feet, so higher can be expected.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

There is an innovative cleaning tool being added to efforts this summer - BEBOT, the all-electric, remote control beach-cleaning robot that is solar and battery-powered.
Two South Lake Tahoe men, JT Chevallier and JB Harris founded ECO-CLEAN Solutions after being frustrated with trash and searching for a way to clean beaches without doing more harm.

South Lake Tahoe man found deceased by sand pits

On Friday, June 10 at about 10:30 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call of a missing man. His wife had come home, and neither her husband nor his vehicle was at the house. His truck was later found unoccupied at the sand pits off Lake Tahoe Boulevard in the El Dorado County area of the South Shore.

There is a cool start to the week that will lead to a midweek warmup that returns above-average temperatures. For the upcoming weekend though, the roller coaster continues when another system could bring cooler temperatures and breezy winds back again.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno for the Lake Tahoe Basin:
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 77. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.
Power outage in portion of South Lake Tahoe - 4500 customers without electricity

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 4,500 customers of LIberty Utilities are without power at this time. At 4:25 p.m., customers at the Y, Tahoe Keys, and at the southern end of Pioneer Trail lost power.
As of 5 p.m., Liberty Utilities has not given an estimation of power restoration or the cause.
The area is under a wind advisory until 8 p.m. with gusts of 45 mph possible at lake level.
LTUSD reinstates fees for school buses after two-year hiatus
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/12/2022 - 3:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be re-instating Transportation Fees in the 2022-23 school year. The temporary removal of the fees was meant to be temporary as the District and families navigated through the pandemic after in-person school resumed.
The reinstatement will also have a price increase of 15 percent added to account for increased costs in the daily operation and maintenance of the buses.

Expect winds from the southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Higher wind gusts are possible in wind prone areas. Wave heights of 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe. Gust over the Sierra ridge could be between 80 and 110 mph.

They reported that 23,000 ballots still had to be counted on Wednesday morning, and that number is down to about 1,000 plus any ballots that were mailed in by Tuesday that hadn't been delivered yet.
El Dorado County Registrar Bill O'Neill said there are about 800 mail-in ballots left to count, and an estimated 200 provisional and conditional voter registrations (CVR) in that approximate 1,000 left to count on Monday.
NDOT SR 431-28 Tahoe Project construction updates

UPDATE 9:00 a.m. Wednesday: There has been an update to the percentages candidates received from the vote count due to the largest number of unqualified write-in votes Registrar of Voters Bill O'Neill has ever seen in El Dorado County. Since there were no qualified write-in candidates, the 4,500 with a write-in became no-votes, and ballots were re-tabulated.

Typically the prescribed burning of forests start in the fall when conditions are favorable with moisture on the ground and lower temperatures. As long as the prescription requirements can be met, fire will be added to the forest until spring.
NDOT employees struck while working on US395, 4 days after Caltrans worker killed on I-80
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/07/2022 - 4:55pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Three Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) survey employees were struck and injured by a passing motorist on US-395 near Topsy Lane while conducting road survey work for a future highway resurfacing project.
Two of the NDOT staff members were reviewing work plans on the roadway shoulder when struck, while another team member was struck while inside a work vehicle.
According to the Nevada State Police, two of the NDOT team members were taken by emergency services to an area hospital. Both were reported to be in stable condition.
South Lake Tahoe to get painted crosswalk to celebrate Pride Month

Council evaluated a few different locations:
1. The U.S. 50 and Lakeview Ave. – West leg crossing on Lakeview. This intersection is within Caltrans jurisdiction and an Encroachment Permit and approval from Caltrans would be required.
2. Ski Run Boulevard at Tamarack Ave – East leg crossing Ski Run Blvd. This

Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/07/2022 - 10:26amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Bally's Corporation may have completed the purchase of Montbleu Resort & Spa from Caesars Entertainment back in April of 2021, the visible signage now reflects that change.
Crews were out at the Stateline, Nevada casino Tuesday to add the "Bally's" to the front of the property that has previously had the names of Park Tahoe and Caesars Tahoe, prior to Montbleu. The casino originally opened in 1978 with a hotel and showroom opening after Caesars Tahoe came in a year later.
LTUSD Superintendent holds open visit hour tonight - subject is school safety

He has been holding these meetings on the first Monday of each month as an opportunity for students, families, and community members to get to know Dr. Todd Cutler in an informal setting, receive updates on District happenings, engage in conversation, and ask questions.

Water supplies have been directed to activate their drought plan to prepare for up to a 20 percent water shortage.
2022 Fire Season underway - restrictions now in place in all districts around Lake Tahoe

This means, as of June 1, almost all fire protection districts around the lake are on the same page when it comes to what is, and isn't, allowed where outdoor fires and barbeques are concerned.
Runners with Reno-Tahoe Odyssey 2022 heading through South Lake Tahoe

Runners will be seen this evening through the South Shore.
The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey course is like no other, given the combination of natural scenery, world-class attractions, and historical points of interest. It is a physical and mental challenge for all runners, yet at the same time, it’s a fair course.

Rattlesnakes not as uncommon as they once were around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/02/2022 - 7:12pmPrior to 2015, rattlesnakes were not seen in the Lake Tahoe Basin. It was that year when a large rattlesnake from underneath the porch of a home in the Bijou neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe.
"That was the first documented rattlesnake within the Lake Tahoe Basin that we, or anyone in the Tahoe Biologist Interagency Group, are aware of," said Dr. Will Richardson said at the time in a story he wrote.
Richardson is the executive director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS).

Starting Wednesday, June 1, no charcoal or wood fires are permitted in the city limits. The use of natural gas (NG), propane (LPG), or pellet BBQ grills, smokers, and firepits are permissible unless a red flag warning is issued.
Douglas County man dies in rollover crash in Glenbrook
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/01/2022 - 9:47amLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A Gardnerville man died on May 21, 2022 in a single vehicle rollover crash in the area of Old Highway 50 and Prey Meadow in the Glenbrook area of Lake Tahoe.
Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of the crash at 3:45 p.m.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2010 GMC Canyon pickup was traveling west on private property when, for unknown reasons, went off the roadway to the left and overturned. The driver was partially ejected from the vehicle.
Farmer's Market season in South Lake Tahoe opens Friday with Ski Run Market

The 2022 Ski Run Farmers Market opens on Friday, June 3, and will run every Friday night until September 16. The market takes place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. They have veggies, fruit, nuts, coffee, gifts, art, food trucks, music, and a "darn good time." This community gathering takes place in the middle of Ski Run Boulevard about halfway between Pioneer Trail and Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Mechanical whole tree thinning project starts near South Lake Tahoe neighborhood

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2020, and that 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/29/2022 - 8:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A weak low pressure moving into western Nevada will keep cool conditions through Memorial Day, with a chance of showers Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Dry and warmer conditions resume for much of this week, then another weather system arrives late in the week through next weekend, bringing increased winds, some cooling, and a chance for more showers.
