72nd Warren Miller film to debut this fall

Warren Miller Entertainment is excited to bring its audience back into theaters for the 72nd feature film, “Winter Starts Now.” The Lake Tahoe premier will be at the Olympic Village Lodge on Nov. 20 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Lake Tahoe agencies to begin fall prescribed fire operations next week

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state, and federal partners, will begin prescribed fire operations around Lake Tahoe beginning next week and continuing through much of the winter season, weather and conditions permitting. Prescribed fires help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

Tahoe Wellness Center asks for zoning amendment to Tourist Core Area Plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council will be hearing about a request for an amendment to the Tourist Core Area Plan at their November 2 meeting. Councilman Cody Bass's business, Tahoe Wellness Center, has submitted a development application to the City of South Lake Tahoe proposing an amendment to the Tourist Core Area Plan/Specific Plan. They need this change so they can operate in the Tourist Core Area, something not currently allowed for current business activities.

Lake Tahoe course explores underpinnings of hate and how to respond to rising antisemitism

This fall, Rabbi Mordey Richler from Chabad at Lake Tahoe will offer a new four-session course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), titled Outsmarting Antisemitism.

Using history, Talmudic sources, Jewish mysticism, and contemporary expert analysis, the course addresses some of the niggling questions we grapple with as individuals and as a community. Why does antisemitism persist? How can we make hate go away? How can we counter Israel-focused antisemitism and prevent our own youth from unwittingly lending their voices to antisemitic agendas?

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 28 new cases of COVID-19 and four deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. The County has released new information about hospitalizations and deaths based on vaccination status.

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 896 cases - +4 - The 14-day new case rate is 35 with 258 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3374 cases - +4 - The 14-day new case rate is 79 with 186 per 100,000 residents.

Tahoe Youth and Family Services executive director announces retirement

Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) Executive Director Karen Carey has announced her retirement effective January 31, 2022. She brought many years of experience with her when she joined the non-profit after retiring as the executive director with Tahoe Safe Alliance and has been a valued leader of the organization since 2018.

“It has been an honor to be the executive director of Tahoe Youth & Family Services. Its mission is critical to our community and to the lives of so many children, youth, adults, and families,” said Carey.

LTUSD homeless advocacy program accepting winter clothing donations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With winter on its way, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) wants to ensure the students in its homeless advocacy program can enjoy playing in the snow this year.

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Office of Education, and other organizations already help students with winter coats and LTUSD is looking to supplement those donations with new or used snow boots, new gloves, hats, bibbed overalls, earmuffs, and snow pants.

Judge Suzanne Kingsbury retiring from the bench after 25 years

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - After 25 years of serving El Dorado County as a Superior Court Judge, Suzanne Kingsbury will be setting down the gavel and retiring at the end of the year.

Kingsbury was elected to the bench in 1996, she made history as the first woman to serve as a superior court judge in El Dorado County, and in 1999 became its first female presiding judge, and now she will be leaving as the longest-serving current presiding judge in the state of California, male or female.

Even though she is retiring, she won't be a stranger in the courthouse.

Tahoe Douglas Fire to have prescribed burn in Zephyr Heights

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District will conduct a one-day prescribed burn operation on private property in the Zephyr Heights neighborhood of Lake Tahoe. They will be burning on Thursday, October 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Other prescribed burn operations will start in the Lake Tahoe Basin, perhaps as early as November 2.

Boulder caused closures on SR28 near Incline Village

UPDATE 5:00 p.m.: The road is now open to two lanes of traffic and the boulder is gone.

UPDATE: There is now single-lane alternating traffic on SR28 around the boulder.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - A boulder larger than a vehicle has fallen onto SR28 near Incline Village Wednesday afternoon. As of 4:00 p.m. the road is closed in both directions south of Lakeshore Boulevard in Incline Village.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is sending a loader to the location so expect delays. Watch for emergency vehicles and personnel.

South Shore Lake Tahoe gaming revenue plummets due to Caldor Fire

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,158,168,180 for the month of September 2021, a gain of 41.07 percent over the same period in 2020. On the other end of things, the South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos win was down 77.24 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $5,643,377, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report Wednesday.

Caltrans in US 50 in South Lake Tahoe doing advance work for $16.8M 2023 project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is alerting motorists of #2 lane and shoulder closures on WB Highway 50 (Lake Tahoe Blvd) at various locations from the "Y" to Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday.

From 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Caltrans staff will be doing utility location work ahead of a safety improvement project planned for 2023.

The U.S. 50 South Lake Tahoe Lighting Safety Project will improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety along the road from the "Y" to the east, ending at the intersection with Pioneer Trail near Stateline.

Workshop on proposed solutions to stop spread of invasive plants in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) and its partners are seeking public input on potential solutions to the spread of aquatic weeds that currently threaten all of Lake Tahoe. They are holding a meeting on Friday, October 29 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Keys Pavilion, 300-498 Ala Wai Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.

A proposed permit for an aquatic weeds control methods test (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System or NPDES) prescribing various treatment options is currently under consideration before the Lahontan Water Board.

Caldor Fire management moves to local control

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that the Caldor Fire is fully contained and a wet storm system covered the area with rain and snow, the previous teams managing the 221,835-acre fire have left.

Starting October 25, on public lands the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will be handling things on the Lake Tahoe side, and the Eldorado National Forest on the West Slope. The final daily update on Inciweb was October 24.

Road Beat: Review ~ 2021 Mazda CX-30 is great yet compromised

The driving experience is wonderful, but this compact crossover is a little too, er, compact.

Mazda has done it again. In a sea of otherwise boring-to-drive cars and fake SUVs, they've come out swinging with a stacked team once again with the CX-30, a compact crossover. While crossovers are far from what gets my blood pumping, the CX-30 does in a way no rival can possibly dream of under forty grand. With its delicious blend of style and performance, it's impossible to ignore, all except the fact that it's just too compact.

Caldor Fire closure area reduced at Lake Tahoe

2021 season marks the most invasive mussels ever intercepted in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. — This Halloween, the scary side of Tahoe is not limited to above ground. The introduction of new aquatic invasive species threatens to wreak havoc on Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem and recreational amenities

Despite hurdles from COVID-19, hazardous air quality, and evacuations from the Caldor Fire, Lake Tahoe’s Watercraft Inspection Program had another successful season as there have been no new invasive species detected in the Lake Tahoe Region.

With power resuming in South Lake Tahoe, Barton Health services are scheduled to be fully operational. Patients who are unable to make their appointments should call their office directly to reschedule.

If power does affect operations in the outpatient clinics, patients will be called directly to reschedule appointments.

Barton Memorial Hospital runs on back up generators during power outages to ensure no disruption in medical services.

Boulders come down on US50 over Echo Summit, One lane of traffic for a few hours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rain over Echo Summit caused rocks to fall onto the roadway Sunday, with crews staying in the area for hours to clear debris if needed. While the rocks this morning were easily removed, large boulders fell onto the road Sunday night and they will have to be blasted.

As of 10;00 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans said to expect delays for up to four hours.

Caldor Post-Fire BAER Assessment report released

The USDA Forest Service has released a summary of its post-fire assessment for emergency stabilization measures and actions on National Forest System (NFS) lands burned by the Caldor Fire on the Eldorado National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

The emergency treatments and activities are designed to decrease possible impacts to critical values from the burned area such as life and safety, property, critical natural resources, and cultural resources.

El Dorado County Food Bank brings free mobile farmer's market to South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Fund supports another season of SOS Outreach

The Tahoe Fund has announced it will continue to support SOS Outreach with a grant that will expand the outdoor youth program’s impact in Lake Tahoe. The nonprofit provides opportunities for underserved youth to experience the outdoors while participating in a mentorship program that is designed to prepare them for life’s challenges.

The impactful program has served more than 585 kids as they learn to ski and snowboard, learn leadership skills, and learn the importance of protecting the environment through service projects each year.

PG&E customers in El Dorado County to have choice on electric company

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Tahoma all have Liberty Utilities as their power company, but residents in all portions of El Dorado County that are served by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) will soon have a choice.

STPUD receives awards for financial and technology excellence

Fire restrictions lifted in South Lake Tahoe, Eldorado National Forest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the arrival of a major dose of precipitation and 100 percent containment of the Caldor Fire, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has lifted the burn ban that had been in place for most of the summer.

In the city limits, this means:
Charcoal and pellet BBQs are allowed
Propane/Gas BBQs are allowed
Wood fires are allowed at Campground by the Lake

Open wood fires are never allowed in the city at any time except at the Campground by the Lake. This includes outside fire pits.

On Red Flag Days, no outdoor cooking of any kind is ever allowed.

Opening on El Dorado County Community Action Council

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Community Action Council currently has a member vacancy within the Community Sector Membership category. The Community Action Council is seeking to fill the vacancy with an individual or agency to represent the interests and concerns of people and families with low incomes living in El Dorado County, with a special focus on housing, nutrition, and low-income program needs. Priority will be given to representatives of community organizations that demonstrate a commitment to advancing the purposes and activities of the Council.

Five locals appointed to newly created Arts, Culture and Tourism Commission

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its meeting Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council appointed the first five voting members of the new Art, Culture and Tourism Commission.

The commission was established via resolution on August 20. Interested members of the community were asked to apply and seven applications were received. The City sought to have applications from youth and for a spot for a non-voting member from the South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District or Lake Tahoe Lodging Association. None were received from these segments.

TERC offering Lake Tahoe residents free sugar pine seedlings

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is offering free sugar pine seedlings to Tahoe residents October 29-31 as part of a restoration project funded by the Tahoe Fund and the California Tahoe Conservancy. The goal of the project is to establish a new generation of genetically diverse sugar pines that can withstand the threats of climate change, including drought and bark beetle outbreaks. By restoring native sugar pines to the area and increasing their genetic diversity, the overall forest will benefit.

POBOB Outlaw Motorcycle Gang member arrested in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) arrested a known motorcycle gang member on Friday, October 22, 2021.

Jay Prater, a Douglas County resident, was arrested on a federal indictment on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.
