NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Carson City Sheriff's Office seeks help finding missing person possibly in South Lake Tahoe area

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is requesting public assistance in locating a missing person, Brian Tucker. His 58th birthday was August 21. He is a white male adult, 5’8”, 200 pounds, bald with blue eyes. He was last heard from by family on July 29, 2024, after leaving the Reno area.

It is suspected that he is in the South Lake Tahoe area. No foul play is suspected in his disappearance at this time.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District hires retired CalFire chief, Kevin Lawson

STATELINE, Nev. — Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) has announced the appointment of Kevin Lawson as the new assistant chief/special operations. Chief Lawson, a seasoned veteran with over 32 years of experience in fire service, assumed the role on August 5 and was officially sworn in on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, calif. - The current weather system that brought cooler temperatures and gusty winds to South Lake Tahoe has caused a few weekend events to be canceled or postponed.

The Forest Service announced the Pathways for Wildlife presentation at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater at Taylor Creek on Friday night is postponed and will be rescheduled for an evening in September.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds pinning ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) recently held a pinning ceremony for two of their team members, Jay Manning and Wade Norberg. Manning was promoted to Fuels Division Chief, and Norberg is a new hire who transferred to SLTFR from the Dixon Fire Department.

The celebration was attended by SLTFR staff, the Lake Valley Fire Department, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the City of South Lake Tahoe staff, the chipping crew, family, and friends.

7th annual Reef's Run at Lake Tahoe to support the Hydrocephalus Association

Deceased woman found along rocks on shore of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a woman in her early 50s was found on the rocks along the shore of Lake Tahoe on Thursday morning. At 11:25 a.m. on August 22, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a call of an "unresponsive" person on the shoreline area across from the Fremont Avenue area. Upon arrival, first responders started lifesaving measures but they were unable to revive her and she was pronounced deceased.

Lake Wind Advisory for much of Lake Tahoe, Red Flag Warning up in surrounding area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe Basin from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Donner Lake, and Prosser and Boca reservoirs are also included in the warning.

Southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and waves up to 3 feet should be expected. Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Sadly, Kelly Bessem is correct when she writes in her recent op-ed: "Lately, the divisiveness that surrounds the Vacancy Tax has gone far beyond standard disagreement and turned into personal attacks."

We CAN get along better than this. We may disagree, but we're all neighbors here in beautiful Tahoe. Yet the vitriol continues.

For this, in large part, I blame the Vacancy Tax Ordinance itself. It has become a truly divisive issue.

Regional partnership to protect Mammoth Lakes

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Clean Up The Lake (CUTL) has announced the successful continuation of its efforts in the Mammoth Lakes Basin this past month. In July 2024, the nonprofit and its volunteers completed a full circumnavigated cleanup and aquatic invasive species (AIS) survey of Lake Mary, the region's most popular lake. This initiative resulted in the removal of approximately 2,000 pounds of litter from the depths of Lake Mary and confirmed that the observed plant species present are native to the area.

A paid canvasser knocked on my front door on Sunday morning. He handed me a flyer with an AI-generated couple in a lakefront home in what looks like upstate New York, but presumably is supposed to be Lake Tahoe.

The creepy-looking flyer and the matching trifold pamphlet delivered to my mailbox are part of a now nearly $1 million campaign funded by the National Association of Realtors and the California Association of REALTORS.

One dies in crash of plane at Minden-Tahoe Airport

UPDATE Wednesday: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has identified the pilot involved in the aircraft crash—which took place on August 20, 2024 at the Minden-Tahoe Airport as Randal G. Abraham, age 68, from Redwood City, Calif. Abraham was pronounced dead at the scene.

The aircraft's sole passenger was Brandt Wood, 52, from Gardnerville, Nev. Wood was transported to Renown by East Fork Fire where he was treated for injuries sustained in the crash. His condition was not released.

Bringing back the Lahontan cutthroat trout to Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - There is only one native trout in Lake Tahoe, the Lahontan cutthroat, and there has been an ongoing effort to bring back the fish that disappeared from the lake almost 90 years ago.

There are many reasons the Lahontan cutthroat trout disappeared from Lake Tahoe including overfishing, logging, water diversions, mining, and perhaps one of the biggest reasons, the introduction of non-native species that fed on the cutthroat.

San Jose father of three identified as man who died in Lake Tahoe near Bonsai Rock

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Tragedy has struck a Bay Area family after Francisco "Cisco" Villa Madrigal, 39, has been identified as the man who died near Bonsai Rock in Lake Tahoe on Sunday, August 18. The Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the identity of Cisco and the cause and manner of death is under investigation though no foul play is suspected.

Cisco's family has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with expenses.

Agencies continue forest thinning projects at Lake Tahoe

U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) employees were the Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsor for Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on August 12. Normally, the men and women of LTBMY spend their time managing vegetation, restoring ecosystems, reducing fire hazards, and maintaining forest health in the South Lake Tahoe Basin. However, at the Monday Meal dinner, their primary focus was to provide a hot, nutritious meal and bags of food to help meet the needs of their fellow community members.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson Will will present a living history program, “The Reno Cure,” in their ballroom on Tuesday, August 27 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Reno has long been known as “The Biggest Little City in the World,” but it wasn’t just the introduction of legalized gambling in 1931 that brought the town its fame and notoriety.

For the first half of the 20th century, hundreds of thousands of people went to the Truckee River town, to get a “quickie” dissolution to their marriage, and created a culture and lifestyle, unlike any other.
