Winter Storm warning in place for Lake Tahoe through Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The storm door remains wide open this week. A Winter Storm Warning continues for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Wednesday, March 15 at 6 p.m.

Expect lesser snow amounts through Monday than originally forecast, then a fast drop in snow levels late Tuesday into Wednesday. Unsettled and showery
conditions remain possible later this week through next weekend.

Annual St. Patrick's dinner at Saint Theresa Church in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saint Theresa Church is holding its annual St. Patrick's Dinner of traditional corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and Irish soda bread on Friday, March 17, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

The dinner will be held in Saint Theresa Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Avenue.

This is a fundraiser and the cost for adults is $15, and for kids ages 5 - 12 $10.

The dinner is a sit-down dinner and tickets are available in the parish office this week, or at the door.

High avalanche danger for Lake Tahoe - one takes out power lines at Stanford Camp

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Sierra Avalanche Center has issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the central Sierra Nevada between Yuba Pass to the north and Ebbetts Pass to the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area. High avalanche danger is expected in the mountains through at least Monday morning.

Expect slabs of wind-blown snow and storm snow to avalanche as heavy snow, some rain, and strong winds continue today. Avalanches could occur on any steep slope at any elevation. Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.

Continued structure issues around South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The heavy snow loads and excess water from the current train of storms continues to compromise roofs around South Lake Tahoe. On Sunday morning, Raley's at the Y closed due to leaking issues. "Due to weather, and in an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed our store," said the store in a statement. "We will post updates as they become available."

TJ Maxx in South Lake Tahoe is also closed due to leaking issues and safety concerns.

On Saturday, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a mobile home on Julie Lane that had a roof collapse.

Douglas County issues precautionary evacuation warning for Buckeye/Dangberg Reservoir

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A precautionary evacuation warning has been issued for the Buckeye/Dangberg Reservoir area due to a possible reservoir overflow. If this happened, the 50 homes in the area and property could be affected.

An overflow could impact other property infrastructure in the area.

Don't forget to turn those clocks forward Sunday

As we deal with snow, rain, dangerous roofs, and roads, the time change may be the last thing on our minds. Sunday, March 12 marks the one time a year when a day has 23 hours in it as Daylight Saving Time begins, and clocks move forward at 2 a.m.

But why are we still having to switch times twice a year after California voters voted to abolish the ritual? Voters passed a ballot measure in 2018 by almost 60 percent, telling the state legislature they wanted a change to daylight saving. State lawmakers still have not passed legislation to abolish it.

Crews responding to flooding in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe public works department is getting help from both South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Tahoe Douglas Fire in helping to mitigate localized flooding.

Streets in the Bijou area were experiencing heavy flooding - Bill Avenue, Shirley Avenue, Vanda Lee Way, and Betty Rae Lane were closed Saturday but have since reopened, though there is still some flooding. Werner Salas Drive is still closed.

There are many other areas experiencing flooding in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, and crews have been also addressing them when they can.

Heavenly Mountain Resorts plans on opening Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After two days of closure, Heavenly Mountain Resorts plans on opening on Sunday with a delayed start time. They are currently digging out, tackling rime ice removal from lifts/lift terminals, conducting snow safety work, and preparing across the mountain for guests to return.

There has been heavy and deep higher elevation snow and rime ice, so those upper mountain runs and lifts won't be open at first. The plan is to have the following areas open:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join Bob Sweatt as he shares flowers from the 2022 Wildflower Year sponsored by the Tahoe Institute of Natural Sciences (TINS). Even though our gardens and wildflowers are buried by snow, it's always time to learn about rare, endangered and uncommon species.

Sweatt's presentation will be at the South Lake Tahoe Library on March 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Lake Tahoe is an area abundant with wildflower species, many that can be found on your hikes, and some not so common.

LTUSD board hears from Washoe Tribe and Sierra House students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its March 9 meeting, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) trustees received a presentation from the Washoe Tribe and Sierra House Elementary students, finances, and new South Tahoe High programs.

During his report, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler encouraged community members to attend the upcoming State of the District Community Conversation that will be held on March 15, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Student Union. Refreshments and snacks will be provided as well as childcare for elementary-age children.

Douglas County commissioners declare local state of emergency

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners declared a local state of emergency to seek assistance from the Nevada governor and state agencies during the current flooding situation.

The County’s decision came amid a period of significant precipitation. With saturated soil and more rain and snowfall on the way, the County remains concerned about localized flooding.

Roof buckling over South Lake Tahoe Raley's at Village Center prompts closure

SUNDAY UPDATE: There was a further collapse of the roof over Raley's in South Lake Tahoe overnight, leaving the inside of the store unstable. Other businesses are still open in the Village Center as the only affected area at this time is the grocery store on one wing, and Sidestreet Boutique on the other.

Walkway and stairs collapse under weight of snow at South Lake Tahoe apartment building

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Five residents had to escape from their apartments Friday night after a partial collapse at a seven-unit complex in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Taho Fire Rescue (SLTFR) received the call at approximately 7:30 p.m. and rushed to the building at 769 San Francisco Avenue. They found a partial collapse on one side of a two-story apartment complex in South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Douglas Fire responds to Thursday night fire in Glenbrook

GLENBROOK, Nev. — A house fire in Glenbrook on Thursday was quickly contained by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD).

On March 9 at 8:27 p.m., TDFPD responded to the home with seven apparatuses. Flames were visible. All occupants made it out of the residence without injury and damage was isolated to a few rooms.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and no other information is available at this time.

South Lake Tahoe Fire and East Fork Fire provided coverage for the district as TDFPD was at the Glenbrook fire.

Heavenly Mountain Resort to remain closed Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As expected, this latest atmospheric river has created major challenges for Heavenly Mountain Resort, its employees, and the South Lake Tahoe community. Due to these challenges, the resort will remain closed for a second day on Saturday.

Both the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County has declared a State of Emergency, and impacts from the weather are widespread from the resort through Lake Tahoe.

Counties reminding all it is illegal to price gouge during a State of Emergency

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With many homeowners around Lake Tahoe in need of snow removal from roofs during the rain-on-snow event, quotes for services have been seen from what many feel are reasonable, to what many believe are unreasonable. The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office joined Placer County today in reminding the public it is illegal to price gouge during a state of emergency.

"Price gouging for snow removal and other goods and services is illegal and we will hold you accountable," said DA Vern Pierson of the practice during the state of emergency.

STPUD seeks public's help in preventing sewer spills during floods at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – With heavy rain on snow causing flooding, South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) asks customers to help prevent stormwater from entering the sewer system. Do not open manholes. Run sump pumps into the storm drain and not into the sewer system.

Local governments ask for people to not travel to Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, US Forest Service, California Highway Patrol, and Placer County are among others all asking for no nonessential travel to the Sierra and Lake Tahoe during the duration of the atmospheric river.

Road closures and other issues due to flooding and snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With rain in the Lake Tahoe Basin and Carson Valley, roads are being covered with standing water. Some roads are closed due to standing water and other weather-related reasons so research all roads before driving.

US50 between Meyers and Twin Bridges has reopened with no controls. A mud/rock slide near Johnson Pass Road closed the road overnight as they cleared the roadway.

Some South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County offices closed

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – Due to travel impacts from regional flooding, Douglas County offices are closing Friday, but County courts will remain open for normal business hours.

Aside from essential public safety, corrections personnel, and courts, all county offices will close early.

There is currently flooding on many roads around Douglas County. Douglas County Sheriff Daniel Coverley has advised that motorists should avoid travel in unnecessary and non-emergency situations.

Second Serving will be closed Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Bread & Broth Second Serving at Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church in South Lake Tahoe will be closed on Friday.

Due to weather and road conditions, the decision was made to not serve on Friday for the safety of guests and volunteers.

They will resume next Friday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Lake Tahoe Presbyterian Church is located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe.

Schools closed in South Lake Tahoe, North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, and Incline Village

10 a.m. update: The Douglas County Sheriffs' office has asked to have all valley dchools to close due to current road conditions and road closures. All DCSD Valley Elementary students who were picked up on the bus are being taken to school and families will need to pick them up. If you haven't sent your student to school please keep them at home. Secondary students can return home on the bus or use their usual transportation method to get home.

Governor Newsom adds El Dorado, Placer and 19 additional counties to State of Emergency

SACRAMENTO Calif. – With a series of storms forecasted to continue through mid-March, including at least two atmospheric rivers, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency for 21 additional counties on Thursday. This move is to support storm response and relief efforts in Butte, El Dorado, Fresno, Humboldt, Imperial, Inyo, Lake, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Stanislaus, Tuolumne, and Yuba counties.

Fire starts after Swiss Mart gas station canopy falls in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another canopy at a South Lake Tahoe gas station fell on Thursday evening, this time causing a fire at one of the gas pumps.

The roadway was closed at the Swiss Mart station at 913 Emerald Bay Road as emergency crews responded. The fire has been contained to one pump and there was no damage reported at the building and no injuries.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has extinguished the fire and is still on the scene.

There is no other information available at this time.

Emergency Operations Center opened for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The CalFIRE, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, and Lake Valley Fire are currently in Unified Command with direction from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to respond to various life and safety requests. El Dorado County and the City of South Lake Tahoe are working together to address the current emergency the area is facing due to a rain-on-snow event.

Another building in South Lake Tahoe suffers roof failure due to snow load

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - More South Lake Tahoe buildings suffering damage from heavy snow loads on roofs.

On Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a business at 2226 Eloise on reports the roof collapsed. Upon arrival, they found a roof failure under the snow load. The pressure caused two bay doors to be blown out. It is now red-tagged as it is unstable.

On Thursday, a beam snapped at 2184 Ruth and the South Lake Tahoe building responded.

2023 final year for National Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport, new venue possible

RENO, Nev. – On Thursday the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) and the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) announced that they have reached an agreement for 2023 to be the final year the Reno-Stead Airport will host the National Championship Air Races. The Reno Air Racing Association’s final Reno-Stead Airport event is set to take place from September 13-17 and will feature the seven classes of air racing plus extraordinary military and civilian demonstrations that fans have come to love as well as a celebration of the event’s almost 60 years in northern Nevada.

Heavenly to close on Friday due to incoming storm, weekend operations on day-to-day basis

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain Resort will be closed on Friday, March 10 due to the incoming atmospheric river storm system. This system will impact South Lake Tahoe through the weekend and into next week, so there may be further operation issues.

Both the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County has issued emergency proclamations and Heavenly said they want to do their part and support the community during the emergency situation.

Liberty encourages customers to prepare for the approaching winter weather

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Winter weather and high winds are anticipated across the region this weekend. The expected combination of snow, rain, freezing temperatures, and winds may produce hazardous conditions and the potential for outages.

Liberty is preparing for potential impacts from the storm and has brought in additional crews to assist with outage response. All of their linemen and additional crews are staged throughout the service territory, ready to respond to outages.

City manager issues emergency proclamation for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The city manager, acting as the director of emergency services, has issued a local emergency proclamation for the City of South Lake Tahoe to leverage all available tools from local, state, and federal resources in response to potential impacts from the forecasted atmospheric river. The emergency proclamation allows the director of emergency services to waive procurement rules and issue emergency orders to address a fluid and changing situation.

Lake Tahoe area residents urged to prepare for impacts of rain-on-snow Thursday-Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is no sugarcoating this - the National Weather Service has issued not only Winter Storm Watch starting Thursday at 4 p.m. for the Lake Tahoe Basin, but also a Flood Watch.

It is rare when those two types of warnings are issued for the same region at the same time. Both are in effect until 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 11.

All Lake Tahoe agencies are warning the public of the possible issues from a rain-on-snow event.

Today the canopy at the vacant Runnels Automotive property tipped over, most likely due to the weight of the snow.

Douglas County urges residents to prepare for possible flooding

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - With an increased chance of precipitation in the forecast for March 9-12, Douglas County is urging residents to prepare for potential flooding. According to the National Weather Service, “The first system arrives late Thursday and continues Saturday. Heavy precipitation is expected, with high elevation heavy, wet snow.”

With wet weather on the horizon, residents should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible road closures.

Winter Weather Advisory Wednesday for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Wednesday from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then, with rain forecast at Lake Tahoe, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning above 6500 feet.

Rain expected Thursday-Monday at Lake Tahoe, now is the time to prepare

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emergency managers and weather experts are watching the computer models this week to see how the forecast atmospheric river (AR) is going to materialize, and what it could mean for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe, as well as lower elevations.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno says the storm door blows wide open on Thursday, with models showing the current North Pacific ridge breaking down and allowing a strong upper-level jet to transport subtropical moisture to our region.

North Tahoe Fire seeing alarming increase in gas leaks, carbon monoxide-related emergencies

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - North Tahoe Fire is reporting an alarming increase in gas leaks, Carbon Monoxide (CO) related emergencies, and other hazard-related emergencies resulting from repeated storms and heavy snow. Since January 1, 2023, they say hazard calls have accounted for nearly 20 percent of non-EMS incidents.

Firefighters are on a mission to empower the public with information on ways to prevent snow-related emergencies by properly maintaining mountain homes.

Supervisor Laine to ask BOS for postponement of VHR agenda item due to snow and safety concerns

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On Tuesday, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has a presentation scheduled on the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) program for the incorporated portion of Lake Tahoe. It is currently set for 10 a.m. certain, but Supervisor Brooke Laine, who represents the Lake Tahoe portion of the county, is asking for a postponement.

Laine said an important topic like VHRs needs to be heard when residents are not facing the effects of recent storms.

Prescribed fire operations at Lake Tahoe may resume tomorrow

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Conditions and weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) may resume prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. The Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Incline Village beginning March 7, 2023. Smoke will be present.

The project they will be working on is the Bon Pland Pile Burn at Sand Harbor. This week they plan to burn two acres of hand piles from 10 a.m. Tuesday until Thursday. Hours of ignition are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with smoke production expected from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
