Juvenile arrested after car stolen in South Lake Tahoe, crashes into police car
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/05/2024 - 8:45pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A juvenile was arrested on Saturday after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a home on Tanglewood Drive. South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Scott Crivelli said the car was stolen at 3 a.m., and later in the day it was spotted near Martin Avenue and Black Bart Avenue. The officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) who saw the stolen car attempted to make a traffic stop at Black Bart and Genoa avenues. The car sped away.
Stuck big-rig closes SR89 at Emerald Bay for much of the day
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/05/2024 - 3:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The driver of a 73-foot big rig took a route not approved as a truck route on Monday morning, finding himself, and the truck, stuck on SR89 and stranding motorists. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded at 11:12 a.m. to the area just north of Cascade Creek, and south of Emerald Bay. Traffic was held up for hours when the truck took a turn too tight, blocking the flow of vehicles.
The truck-trailer combination will remain on the highway until it can be moved safely, but traffic is flowing. The air lines on the truck are inoperable.
Douglas County School District making leadership moves this summer

After the board recently approved the hiring of Frankie Alvarado as its new superintendent, other new roles have been made known.

Late Friday, an upper air trough will move into the Pacific Northwest which will push the ridge to the east a bit. Daytime temperatures may start to cool slightly through the following weekend.
At this time there is no rain or thunderstorms in the forecast.
The South Lake Tahoe forecast for the week from the National Weather Service in Reno:
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 86. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Monthly gaming report: Lake Tahoe casinos "win" figure was $21.4M in June
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/04/2024 - 9:00pmNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,286,686,312 for June 2024, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's latest monthly report. This amounts to a 3.25 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,246,020,144. For the fiscal year, the gaming win has increased by 4.36 percent with $15,765,165,340 in "win".
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
Major travel delays can be expected on SR28 next week in North Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/04/2024 - 9:23amNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a broadband installation project and gas-line replacement work continuing along State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.
The broadband project is a part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed broadband into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.
One-way traffic control is scheduled along SR-28 between the Tahoe State Park entrance and the State Route 89 intersection:

The deadline to file is August 9, 2024. If an incumbent does not file for reelection, the filing period will be extended to August 14 for that position only.

Rowe, Kira Richardson, and Alicia Halpern as "real parties in interest."
Tahoe Douglas Fire raised rates for service on August 1

The rise in rates includes, but is not limited to, construction inspections, vacation home rental inspections, special event inspections, plan reviews, incident response, and stand-by fees.
Fees enable TDFPD to recuperate expenses incurred by vehicles, personnel, and materials involved with fire prevention, fire suppression, and emergency medical services used by locals, businesses, and visitors.

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) has begun the update for its Short-Range Transit Plan, and TTD is creating this webpage to solicit public comments during the process.
Lake Tahoe air quality affected by Park Fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/31/2024 - 10:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the Park Fire has been affecting the air quality for much of Northern California and Western Nevada, and more of the same can be expected through Thursday. The Park Fire is 18 percent contained as of June 31 and has burned 391,200 acres covering four counties, Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama.
According to AirNow, Lake Tahoe has been in the "moderate" to "unhealthy for sensitive groups" ranges, with the North Shore having the poorer air quality. Truckee is currently in the unhealthy" range.
Thursday should be more of the same.
South Lake Tahoe man one of three killed during brawl at Ely State Prison

The Nevada Department of Corrections also identified inmate Zackaria Luz, and the name of the third person has not yet been released, pending notification of family.
Head-on collision in South Lake Tahoe sends four to hospital

On July 26, 2024, at approximately 1 p.m., A 2022 Prius was being driven northbound near Tionontati Street when, for unknown reasons, the Prius crossed into the southbound lane, hitting a 2022 GMC Sierra head-on.
TRPA settles with jet boat operator who entered the Upper Truckee River Marsh

In April 2024, TRPA staff received complaints and video documentation of a motorized watercraft operating more than 5 mph in the sensitive Upper Truckee River Marsh on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. Operating motorized watercraft in tributaries of Lake Tahoe and speeding within 600 feet of shore are prohibited by TRPA regulations to protect public safety, water quality, habitat, and recreation.

The guilty verdict led Judge Suzanne Kingsbury to sentence him to Life Without the Possibility of Parole on December 2, 2022.
Lake Tahoe Clarity Report: Winter lake conditions clearest in 40 years while summer clarity drops

The clarity of Lake Tahoe’s famed blue waters in 2023 continued its years-long trend of improving during the winter and deteriorating during the summer.
Winter lake conditions were the clearest observed since 1983 and the 10th best on record, with visibility of 91.8 feet under the surface, compared with 72.2 feet in 2022.

Smoke from the Park Fire will continue to impact portions of northeast California and western Nevada through the week, mostly north of Lake Tahoe.
The potential for thunderstorms returns late this week and into the weekend. Beyond that, things are looking warm for South Lake Tahoe (see map above).

Patton Landing Beach reopened at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 25.
70-year-old man found safe after spending five nights in wilderness west of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/24/2024 - 8:37pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Warren Elliott went missing Friday afternoon after going for a walk after doing trail rehab work ahead of the Jeep Jamboree along the Rubicon 4x4 trail. Since then, up to 100 searchers a day from 10 agencies from across the state have been looking for the 70-year-old man.
It was long-awaited news at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, when the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) received a 911 text from someone stating they were with a missing person at Hell Hole Reservoir. It was quickly confirmed they were with Warren.

Charges upgraded to murder after South Lake Tahoe shooting victim dies

Christopher A. Guzman, 28, was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) as a suspect after the shooting in the 2000 block of Eloise Avenue.
Liquidation company says Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe tactics leading them to bankruptcy

Luxury 4 Less owner Tracy Hunt said she was hired to liquidate the furniture in the rooms that were being renovated, along with 125 slot machines. Hunt said that, after working with Golden Nugget management for over three weeks, she was sent an approval letter to pick up the furniture plus a Nevada Gaming Board approval letter to remove the slot machines.
Health Advisory still in effect for some North Lake Tahoe beaches
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/22/2024 - 10:03pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Carnelian Bay West Beach and Patton Landing Beach will both remain closed after a sewer line break near Carnelian Bay dumped untreated sewage into Lake Tahoe on Thursday, July 18.
A private contractor struck the North Tahoe Public Utility District’s (NTPUD) main sewer export pipeline, resulting in 125,000 gallons of untreated sewage being discharged, 85,000 of those gallons ending up in the lake.
Lightning-caused fires in Plumas National Forest, evacuations underway
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/22/2024 - 8:17pmPLUMAS COUNTY, Calif. - Four fires started Monday afternoon after a thunderstorm passed through eastern Plumas County around 2 p.m. The four fires were all dry lightning strikes and were outside of the rain core of the storm.
The Mill, Mill 2, and Mill 3 fires are currently burning near the community of Whitehawk Ranch. The Smith Fire is currently burning north of California State Highway 70 between Smith Peak and Maybe. Together they are being called the Gold Complex.
Bay Area man dies after being pinned between two trucks on Lake Tahoe's West Shore

On July 22, 2024, at approximately 12:53 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers from South Lake Tahoe were dispatched to a strip mall parking lot where they found a victim crushed between a truck tractor and trailer combination and a Ford F450.
Body of Reno man recovered in Topaz Lake
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/22/2024 - 2:08pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A man who had been reported missing on Sunday afternoon in Topaz Lake was found deceased on Monday morning. On July 22, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine units and dive team, along with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, located and recovered 51-year-old Rodney Mitchell of Reno, Nev.
Although drowning is believed to be the cause of death, the decedent was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office for a definitive cause of death.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/21/2024 - 7:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will continue to run above late July averages in South Lake Tahoe, with the Reno and Carson Valley under moderate-major heat risks with their highs above 100.
The chance for daily thunderstorms continues through Thursday. Storms will be trending wetter through the week with increased chances for localized heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
There will be a cooling trend at the end of the week, with highs in South Lake Tahoe in the low 80s, and possibly high 70s.

Search on for person missing after jumping into Topaz Lake
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/21/2024 - 7:16pmMONDAY UPDATE: - A man who had been reported missing on Sunday afternoon in Topaz Lake was found deceased on Monday morning. On July 22, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine units and dive team, along with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, located and recovered 51-year-old Rodney Mitchell of Reno, Nev.
Although drowning is believed to be the cause of death, the decedent was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office for a definitive cause of death.
US50 impacts due to brushfire in Pollock Pines, forward progress of fire stopped
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/21/2024 - 1:23pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Ridgeway Fire in Pollock Pines closed lanes of US50 for a while on Sunday, July 21 so firefighters could fight the fire reported just after noon. Quick response from the air and ground stopped the forward progress quickly, and so far seven acres have burned.
Perimeter Map had homes between Pony Express Trail and the highway evacuate, but as of 2 p.m., the mandatory evacuations have been dropped.
A second fire was reported at the same time nearby and small plumes of smoke could be seen at the Alert California cameras.
LTCC addresses concerns about 33-year-old Demonstration Garden

Designed with the collaboration of several agencies, groups, and individuals, the garden was created on seven acres to showcase attractive native and adapted plants while using conservation techniques to address water quality concerns. Several gazebos and sitting areas were added with tree and plant descriptions along a pathway that meandered through the displays.
